Ford Edge rough idle and misfire problems: what 858 owners reported

Share on:

Owners filed 858 NHTSA complaints about rough idling, misfires or hesitation when accelerating on the Ford Edge. That is 9.3% of the 9,252 complaints on file for the model. Most come from model years 2017 (289 reports) and 2018 (206 reports). NHTSA's recall data for these model years has no recall matching this problem as of 27 October 2026.

Many of the recent reports describe a check engine light, a rough cold start and a dealer finding coolant in a cylinder on the 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines. Others, mostly on later models, describe hesitation or shuddering that owners say dealers linked to the transmission torque converter. If this is not your case, read the full Ford Edge problem report.

TL;DR

  • 858 reports out of 9,252 Ford Edge complaints (9.3%) match rough idle, misfire or hesitation.
  • The worst years are 2017 (289 reports, 21.0% of that year's complaints) and 2018 (206 reports, 24.3%).
  • The most named components are Engine (560 reports), Power Train (186) and Engine And Engine Cooling (171).
  • One report mentions a crash, none mention a fire, and the reports list 1 injury in total.
  • No NHTSA recall matches this problem for these model years as of the brief date.
  • Several owners cite Ford TSB 22-2229 and a quoted engine repair of 11k or more; these are owner statements, not something I have verified.

The reports cluster in 2016 to 2018, where this symptom makes up between 13% and 24% of all complaints for the year. Earlier years have far more complaints overall (2013 has 2,446), but only a small share are about rough running. The 2024 model year has 44 complaints in total and none match this symptom. The newest years have had less time on the road, so their counts may still grow.

What do Ford Edge owners describe?

Owners describe two fairly different patterns.

Misfires, a check engine light and coolant in the cylinders (2016 to 2018). A 2018 owner wrote: "The 2018 Edge has been having Engine misfires for at least 3 months. Edge has had rough starts in the AMs - Check engine has gone on and off." (NHTSA complaint 11772445). A 2016 owner reported that a dealer "found diagnostic trouble codes P0304 and P0316 stored in the PCM" after a check engine light and white smoke from the exhaust (complaint 11769502). The same complaint says the dealer "confirmed coolant intrusion into cylinder 4" and identified Ford TSB 22-2229, which the owner says calls for replacing the engine long block. Another 2016 owner writes that a dealership "confirmed coolant intrusion into the engine" and that Ford "has not offered to cover the cost of the repair" (complaint 11771796).

Loss of power and poor idle. A 2018 owner reported "a sudden loss of power, hesitation, white smoke during operation and a loss of coolant. Vehicle idles poorly and sometimes dies when stopped at stop lights." (complaint 11772691). A 2017 owner wrote that the car "would shudder upon starting up and constantly lost antifreeze" and that a dealer "confirmed coolant leaking into cylinder 2" (complaint 11770725).

Hesitation and shudder on later models, linked by owners to the transmission. A 2020 owner wrote: "Car stutters, shudders, and hesitates from stopped position." and says a dealer and an independent mechanic both named the torque converter (complaint 11756196). A 2022 owner describes "severe shuddering, jerking, harsh shifting, lurching, and hesitation" and an $8,500 estimate to rebuild the transmission (complaint 11759990). A 2019 owner reports that Ford diagnosed a bad torque converter after other parts had been replaced (complaint 11772404).

Older models. A 2013 owner wrote that the car "would hesitate to accelerate as though it is running out of gas but it isn't out of gas" and later died while pulling out into traffic (complaint 11689481). A 2012 owner reported that the car started to misfire at 45 mph and slowed from 40 to 20 mph near a railroad crossing (complaint 11363161).

The complaints name Engine most often (560), then Power Train (186) and Engine And Engine Cooling (171). Smaller groups name Fuel/Propulsion System (24), Service Brakes (20) and Vehicle Speed Control (15). One report mentions a crash; none mention a fire.

Is there a recall for rough idle or misfires on the Ford Edge?

As of 27 October 2026, NHTSA's recall data for these model years has no recall matching this problem. Recalls for other parts may still apply to a given car, and the model page lists them: see the Ford Edge problem report. The Technical Service Bulletin numbers some owners mention are not recalls, and I have not seen the bulletin text, so I cannot say what it covers.

What should you do if your Ford Edge idles rough or misfires?

  • Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  • Write down when it happens: cold start, idle, pulling away, uphill or on the highway, plus mileage, dates and any warning messages or codes.
  • Ask a dealer to check for open recalls and manufacturer service bulletins that apply to your VIN and engine.
  • If the car loses power in traffic, I would stop driving it and call for help rather than carry on.
  • Report the problem at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. Reports like these are the data behind this guide.
  • Look at the report page for your year, for example 2017 or 2018, to compare with other owners.

How this guide was made

The data comes from NHTSA owner complaints for the Ford Edge. Complaints were matched to this symptom from the owner's own description of rough idling, misfires or hesitation, then counted by model year, as of 27 October 2026. The quotes are the owners' words with only capital letters normalised. See the methodology for details.
