Ford F-150 transmission shifting problems: what 902 owners reported
Owners have filed 902 complaints with NHTSA describing a Ford F-150 that shifts harshly, jerks, shudders or changes gear when it should not. That is 5.3% of the 16,980 complaints on file for the model. The reports cover model years 2012 to 2026, and 2018 stands out with 199 of them, followed by 2019 with 146.
NHTSA's recall data for these model years has no recall matching this problem as of October 2026, although some owners mention Ford service programs in their own reports. Whether any program applies to a particular truck depends on its VIN. If this is not your case, read the full Ford F-150 problem report.

Which Ford F-150 years have the most transmission shifting complaints?
| Model year | Reports | All complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 1 | 18 | 5.6% |
| 2025 | 5 | 137 | 3.6% |
| 2024 | 6 | 262 | 2.3% |
| 2023 | 22 | 623 | 3.5% |
| 2022 | 35 | 906 | 3.9% |
| 2021 | 82 | 1,299 | 6.3% |
| 2020 | 68 | 559 | 12.2% |
| 2019 | 146 | 1,017 | 14.4% |
| 2018 | 199 | 1,927 | 10.3% |
| 2017 | 47 | 1,143 | 4.1% |
| 2016 | 42 | 1,789 | 2.3% |
| 2015 | 25 | 1,425 | 1.8% |
| 2014 | 29 | 1,362 | 2.1% |
| 2013 | 106 | 2,796 | 3.8% |
| 2012 | 89 | 1,717 | 5.2% |
There are two clusters. The 2018 to 2020 trucks carry the highest shares, with shifting making up more than one complaint in ten for each of those years. The 2012 and 2013 trucks have fewer shifting complaints as a share, but 195 reports between them, because those years have many complaints of every kind.
The newest years (2024 to 2026) show few reports. They have had less time on the road, so a low count there says little about how those trucks will age.
What do F-150 owners describe?
Sudden downshifts at speed. This is the most common picture in the quotes. A 2012 owner wrote: "Once, I was traveling at 70mph and, all by itself, it downshifted into 1st gear. The truck lurched and made a loud bang." (complaint 11650749). A 2018 owner described the transmission shifting "from 10-1-9th gear at 60-70mph at least 10 times now leaving the 10th gear unavailable and a wrench on the dashboard" (complaint 11772732).
Loss of drive. A 2019 owner reported that "the engine revved but the truck would not move" and that the truck had to be towed (complaint 11766994). A 2014 owner wrote: "my truck experienced a hard downshift immediately followed by a check engine light. I lost all acceleration and had to coast to a safe place to pull over." (complaint 11646110). That owner added a P0721 code, which the complaint describes as the output speed sensor.
Shudder and vibration. A 2017 owner wrote: "The truck experiences significant vibration and shuddering at speeds above 45 mph." (complaint 11763384). The owner says the torque converter had malfunctioned and the truck was at the dealership.
Clunks and harsh engagement. A 2023 owner reported "Severe transmission shifting, loud clunk and jerking/whiplash and failure to engage when first put into gear." (complaint 11769083), and said the shifting got worse after a transmission rebuild. A 2024 owner wrote: "Occasional hard downshift for no reason." and "More common on hill." (complaint 11732311).
What dealers and owners say they found. A 2015 owner wrote: "Began experiencing hard shifting unexpectedly. Took it into dealership and they advised my lead frame assembly needed replacement." (complaint 11672744). Several other owners name Ford service programs or bulletins in their complaints, for example 24S37, 26N04 and TSB 24-2176. These are the owners' own statements and I have not matched them to NHTSA recall records here.
The components named across the 902 reports are Power Train (724), Engine (200), Vehicle Speed Control (70), Electrical System (38), Fuel/Propulsion System (37) and Service Brakes (16). A report can name more than one component. Ten reports mention a crash, one mentions a fire, and the reports list 4 injuries in total.
Is there a recall for transmission shifting on the F-150?
NHTSA's recall data for these model years has no recall matching this problem as of the brief date of 27 October 2026. That does not mean your truck has no open recall. Recalls for other parts may apply, and owners in the quotes above mention service programs that I have not been able to match to a recall record. The model page lists what NHTSA holds for each year: see the Ford F-150 problem report.
The safest check is by VIN. Enter yours at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Ford dealer to check for open service programs and technical service bulletins as well.
What should you do if your F-150 shifts harshly or jerks?
- Check open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Write down the date, the mileage, the speed, whether the engine was warm or cold, any warning message or wrench symbol, and which gears were involved.
- Ask a dealer to check for open recalls, service programs and manufacturer service bulletins for your VIN, and ask for the findings in writing.
- Report the problem at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. Reports are how patterns like the ones above become visible.
- If the truck loses drive, or downshifts hard in traffic, I would stop driving it and call for help rather than continue.
I am not a mechanic and this guide does not diagnose your truck. It shows what other owners reported so that you can describe your own case clearly. See also the reports for 2018 and 2019, the two years with the most complaints.
How this guide was made
The data comes from NHTSA's public owner complaints for the Ford F-150, model years 2012 to 2026, as of 27 October 2026. A complaint counts here when the owner's own text describes harsh, jerky or delayed shifting, or shuddering. Owner quotes are shortened only with an ellipsis and keep the wording of the complaint, with capital letters normalised. For the full method, see how the problem reports are built.
