Ford Focus stalling problems: what 2,665 owners reported

Share on:

Owners of the 2012 to 2018 Ford Focus have filed 2,665 complaints with NHTSA about the engine stalling, losing power or shutting off while driving. That is 21.1% of the 12,615 complaints filed for this model. Of these reports, 51 mention a crash and 10 mention a fire, and together they list 41 injuries. The 2012 and 2014 model years have the most reports.

A recall exists. Ford recall 26S40 (NHTSA campaign 26V369, dated 2026-06-09) covers 2012 to 2018 Focus cars and says a faulty canister purge valve may cause the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving. Not every stalling report in the data is about that valve, though. If this is not your case, read the full Ford Focus problem report.

TL;DR

  • 2,665 stalling and power loss reports, 21.1% of 12,615 Focus complaints.
  • Most reports: 2012 (629), 2014 (609) and 2013 (451).
  • 51 reports mention a crash and 10 a fire; together the reports list 41 injuries.
  • Recall 26V369 (Ford 26S40) covers 2012 to 2018 Focus cars for a canister purge valve that may cause stalling. The fix is a free PCM software update.
  • The complaints name Power Train (1,325), Engine (755) and Fuel/Propulsion System (607) most often.
  • Check your VIN at the NHTSA recall page before you assume anything.

Bar chart of Ford Focus stalling complaints by model year, 2012 to 2018

Which Ford Focus years have the most stalling complaints?

Model yearReportsAll complaintsShare
201822183726.4%
201722390624.6%
20162991,19425.0%
20152331,03422.5%
20146092,66022.9%
20134512,18120.7%
20126293,80316.5%

The raw counts peak in 2012 and 2014, which also have the most complaints of any kind. Measured as a share of each year's complaints, stalling is actually highest in the newer years: 26.4% for 2018 and 25.0% for 2016, against 16.5% for 2012. The 2012 year has so many complaints on other topics that stalling is a smaller slice of it. Newer cars have had less time on the road to collect complaints, so their counts are lower.

What do Focus owners describe?

The complaints do not describe one single failure. Several patterns appear.

Stalling or power loss linked to the canister purge valve. Many owners connect their car to the recall. One 2018 owner wrote that the car "will slow to a stop" when it "accelerates too quickly or up a very gradual hill" and that they have "stalled 4 times" (complaint 11769967). A 2012 owner reported that "the engine suddenly stalled" and that diagnostic scans showed "critical low fuel pressure" (complaint 11758411).

Trouble getting the recall or related program done. A 2017 owner wrote that "complete loss of power while driving" had been a complaint and that the dealer wanted to run diagnostics first, or "charge us $200" (complaint 11761377). A 2012 owner said two dealers told them a diagnostic evaluation came first (complaint 11761402). Another owner reported that after a recall repair the vehicle "completely lost power" on the highway and the "check engine light suddenly illuminated" (complaint 11756823).

Fuel level readings. A 2014 owner described running out of fuel four times while the display showed range remaining, with the engine shutting off "unexpectedly in the roadway" (complaint 11769171).

Throttle and wiring. A 2013 owner described a car that "lost power" a couple of times "before completely dying", with throttle codes 2112 and 2111, and said a dealer pointed to corroded wiring (complaint 11763027). This is the owner's account, not a confirmed cause.

Transmission. Some stalling reports involve the DPS6 automatic transmission. A 2016 owner wrote that the car "would shudder and lose power" at highway speed (complaint 11765634), and a 2018 owner wrote that the car "loses engine power and stalled into traffic" and did not go into reverse (complaint 11766315).

Across all 2,665 reports, the components named most often are Power Train (1,325), Engine (755), Fuel/Propulsion System (607), Electrical System (306), Fuel System (203) and Gasoline (200). A report can name more than one component.

Is there a recall for stalling on the Focus?

Yes, one matches. Ford recall 26S40, NHTSA campaign 26V369, was issued on 2026-06-09 for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Focus vehicles.

  • Defect: Ford is recalling certain 2012 to 2018 Focus vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.
  • Risk: an engine that stalls while driving increases the risk of a crash.
  • Fix: dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed July 29, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
  • The recall data does not flag this as a do-not-drive or park-outside recall.

The recall says "certain" vehicles, so check your own VIN rather than the model year. The recall text covers the purge valve only. It does not cover the throttle wiring, fuel level display or transmission complaints above. Other recalls for other parts may also apply, see the Focus problem report.

What should you do if your Focus stalls?

  1. Check your VIN for open recalls at the NHTSA recall page.
  2. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it and call for help.
  3. Write down dates, mileage, warning messages and the conditions each time it happens (hot or cold, speed, hill, after refuelling).
  4. Ask a dealer to check for open recalls and manufacturer service bulletins on your VIN, and keep the repair order.
  5. Report the problem at NHTSA's safety problem page.

I am not a mechanic, so I would not guess at a cause. A written record of when and how it happens is what helps a dealer and NHTSA.

How this guide was made

The counts come from NHTSA owner complaints for the 2012 to 2018 Ford Focus, matched to stalling, power loss and engine shut off by the complaint text, and the recall details come from NHTSA recall data, as of 2026-10-27. The quotes are shortened from the owners' own words. See the methodology for how matching works and what it cannot tell you.
