Ford Focus transmission shifting problems: what 1,820 owners reported
Owners of the Ford Focus have filed 1,820 complaints with NHTSA that describe harsh, jerky or delayed shifting, or a shudder when pulling away. That is 14.4% of the 12,615 complaints on file for the model. The reports cover model years 2012 to 2018, and 2014 has the most, with 529.
NHTSA's recall data for these model years has no recall that matches this problem as of 27 October 2026. Several owners do mention a Ford program or a recall number, which I cover below, so check your own VIN. If this is not your case, read the full Ford Focus problem report.
TL;DR
- 1,820 complaints about transmission shifting, out of 12,615 for the Focus (14.4%).
- Most reports are from model years 2012 to 2014: 401, 353 and 529 reports.
- 1,581 of the reports name the Power Train component, 252 name the Engine.
- 22 reports mention a crash and 1 mentions a fire. The reports list 18 injured people in total.
- No recall in NHTSA's data for these model years matches this problem.
- Owners mention a Ford program 14M02 and a recall number 19S22 in their own words. I could not confirm either from this data, so check by VIN.
Which Ford Focus years have the most transmission shifting complaints?
| Model year | Reports | All complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 75 | 837 | 9.0% |
| 2017 | 131 | 906 | 14.5% |
| 2016 | 180 | 1,194 | 15.1% |
| 2015 | 151 | 1,034 | 14.6% |
| 2014 | 529 | 2,660 | 19.9% |
| 2013 | 353 | 2,181 | 16.2% |
| 2012 | 401 | 3,803 | 10.5% |
The 2014 Focus stands out on both counts: the most reports, and the highest share of its own complaints (19.9%). The 2012 model has more complaints overall, but transmission shifting is a smaller part of them (10.5%). From 2015 to 2017 the share sits close to 15%. The 2018 cars have the fewest reports and the lowest share, though they have also had the least time on the road.
What do Focus owners describe?
Many owners name the DPS6 dual-clutch automatic. The reports describe a few repeating patterns.
Shuddering and jerking when pulling away or at low speed. One 2016 owner wrote that the car "shudders and hesitates when accelerating in low gears, causing delayed engagement and unpredictable power delivery" and that it happens "when entering traffic or moving through intersections" (NHTSA complaint 11727541). A 2017 owner listed "shuddering (driving and turning corners), delayed acceleration and bouncing from a stop" (11738807).
Trouble selecting gears. A 2018 owner wrote: "The ford focus I drive is constantly shuddering and having trouble selecting gears" (11744664). A 2014 owner described the car as "violently jerking/shuddering while moving forward" that "suddenly would not go into reverse" (11755617). A 2015 owner also reported that at one point the car "would not shift into reverse" (11747178).
Overheating message and loss of power. A 2016 owner received a "transmission overheating" message with "pull over for 5 minutes" in heavy traffic, and wrote that before the message "car would shudder and lose power" at highway speed (11765634). A 2017 owner described a warning that the transmission was overheating, and a car that would "go into limp mode" (11760607).
What dealers reportedly found. Owners quote codes and diagnoses from their dealers. A 2014 owner reported trouble code P090C:68, "related to the clutch actuator system" (11755617). Another 2014 owner reported DTC P07A3, "Transmission Friction Element A Stuck On", with a recommended repair that "exceeds $4,000" (11743241). A 2016 owner reported a dealer estimate of "approximately $3,700" (11727541). These are what the owners wrote, not findings I can verify.
Repeat repairs. A 2013 owner wrote that the car "has had the shudder clutch replaced 3 times in 4 years" (11700041). A 2015 owner wrote: "The transmission was repaired at 48k and I am now at 76k having severe issues with jerking, shuddering, and so forth" (11756062).
Across the 1,820 reports, the components named most often are Power Train (1,581), Engine (252), Vehicle Speed Control (106), Fuel/Propulsion System (104), Electrical System (84) and Steering (32). A report can name more than one component.
Safety is the reason this matters. 22 reports mention a crash. One 2013 owner wrote that the car "wouldnt go in any gear besides reverse" on the highway and that another vehicle was rear ended after the car behind them braked suddenly (11686017). The reports list 18 injured people in total across all 1,820, and 1 report mentions a fire.
Is there a recall for transmission shifting on the Focus?
In the data I used, no. NHTSA's recall data for 2012 to 2018 Focus models has no recall matching this problem as of 27 October 2026. Recalls for other parts may still apply to your car, and the Ford Focus problem report lists what NHTSA has on file.
Some owners refer to Ford programs in their own complaints. One 2012 owner wrote about "Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 14M02", which they said expired on June 30, 2025 (11708909). A 2015 owner wrote that the TCM was replaced "under Ford Field Service Action 14M02" (11747178). Another 2012 owner wrote that they "noticed there was a 19S22 recall" but that Ford told them their vehicle "didn’t get it" (11726335). I cannot verify what those programs cover or whether they apply to your car. The reliable way to find out is to enter your VIN on the NHTSA site and ask a Ford dealer.
What should you do if your Focus shudders or shifts hard?
- Check open recalls for your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Ask a Ford dealer to check for open recalls, customer satisfaction programs and manufacturer service bulletins for your VIN, and ask for the answer in writing.
- Write down the dates, mileage, warning messages, any trouble codes the dealer gives you, and the conditions when it happens (cold start, low speed, highway).
- Keep every repair invoice and estimate. Several owners above cite their repair history.
- Report the problem at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. Each report adds to the numbers in this guide.
- If the car loses power or shows a transmission overheating warning in traffic, I would pull over somewhere safe and call for help rather than keep driving.
If you are buying a used Focus from these years, I would ask for the service history and check the VIN for open recalls before viewing the car.
How this guide was made
The data is NHTSA's public vehicle owner complaints for the Ford Focus. I matched owner complaint text to this symptom (harsh, jerky or delayed shifting, or shuddering) and counted 1,820 reports, as of 27 October 2026. Quotes are copied from the complaints, with capital letters normalised. For the full method, see the methodology page. To look up another car, use the car problem lookup.
