Jeep Grand Cherokee stalling problems: what 1,179 owners reported
Owners have filed 1,179 complaints with NHTSA describing a Jeep Grand Cherokee that stalls, loses power or shuts off while driving. That is 11.8% of the 10,008 complaints on file for the model. The reports cover model years 2012 to 2026, and 2012 stands out with 352 of them.
NHTSA's recall data lists several campaigns that name a stall or a loss of drive power on the Grand Cherokee, for the diesel, the 3.6 L petrol, the plug-in hybrid (4xe) and the 2011 to 2013 fuel pump relay. Whether one applies to a particular car depends on its VIN. If this is not your case, read the full Jeep Grand Cherokee problem report.

Which Jeep Grand Cherokee years have the most stalling complaints?
| Model year | Stalling reports | All complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 7 | 29 | 24.1% |
| 2025 | 11 | 82 | 13.4% |
| 2024 | 36 | 272 | 13.2% |
| 2023 | 63 | 499 | 12.6% |
| 2022 | 66 | 377 | 17.5% |
| 2021 | 46 | 409 | 11.2% |
| 2020 | 23 | 241 | 9.5% |
| 2019 | 41 | 370 | 11.1% |
| 2018 | 56 | 855 | 6.5% |
| 2017 | 37 | 364 | 10.2% |
| 2016 | 54 | 311 | 17.4% |
| 2015 | 82 | 1,367 | 6.0% |
| 2014 | 167 | 2,383 | 7.0% |
| 2013 | 138 | 805 | 17.1% |
| 2012 | 352 | 1,644 | 21.4% |
The 2012 to 2014 cars account for 657 of the 1,179 reports, more than half. 2014 has many stalling reports but they are only 7.0% of a very large pile of complaints (2,383), so stalling is not the main story there. In 2012 and 2013 it is a much bigger part of what owners write about.
Another cluster sits in 2022 to 2024 (165 reports between them), the years that include the plug-in hybrid. The 2025 and 2026 counts are small, but those cars have had the least time on the road, so low counts there say little. Shares in 2026 (7 of 29) rest on very few complaints.
What do Grand Cherokee owners describe?
The complaints are written by owners, not mechanics, and they are not diagnoses. Read them as descriptions of what people experienced.
Sudden stall with no warning. Several owners say nothing warned them. One 2021 owner wrote: "without warnin lamps, messages or other symptoms my vehicle stopped running" (NHTSA complaint 11758719). A 2024 owner described that the vehicle "lost total propulsion at 60mph with zero dashboard error text or warning lights" (11770965).
Stalling on the highway. A 2013 owner whose dealer had worked on the fuel pump wiring wrote: "within 10 hours of getting my car back I stalled on the highway in the fast lane" (11728069). A 2020 owner wrote of "a sudden and complete loss of motive power without warning" on the interstate (11756023).
Crankshaft sensor on the 3.0 L diesel. A 2016 owner wrote: "Received a warning light and vehicle decelerated with a loss of power" (11718374). A 2015 owner wrote: "While traveling 60mph the car stalled and went into limp mode with no prior warning" (11767448) and says a repair shop found a crankshaft position sensor fault.
Fuel pump relay on older cars. A 2014 owner described a car that "would crank but would not start" and says the fuel pump relay or TIPM is suspected (11748668). That is the owner's suspicion, not a confirmed finding.
Plug-in hybrid (4xe). A 2023 owner wrote of "a catastrophic, sudden loss of propulsion/driving power with no prior warning" and a dashboard message "plug in vehicle for battery conditioning" (11771570). A 2022 owner wrote that the vehicle "suffered a sudden "Loss of Motive Power" and stalled completely on a public road" (11772311).
Reduced steering and braking assist. A 2020 owner wrote that "power steering and power braking assists were greatly reduced" after the stall (11756023). Steering (88 reports) and service brakes (52) appear among the components named.
Across all 1,179 reports, 26 mention a crash, 27 mention a fire, and the reports list 10 injuries in total.
Is there a recall for stalling on the Grand Cherokee?
Yes, several, each for a specific engine or system. NHTSA lists these campaigns (model years as NHTSA lists them for the Grand Cherokee):
| Campaign | Model years | What NHTSA says |
|---|---|---|
| 19V813000 | 2012, 2013 | The fuel pump relay in the TIPM-7 may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning. Remedy: replace the relay and related wire harness. |
| 20V475000 | 2014 to 2016 | 3.0 L diesel: the crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, possibly causing an engine stall. Remedy: powertrain control module software update. |
| 23V411000 | 2014 to 2020 | The same 3.0 L diesel tone wheel problem, a wider set of years. Same software remedy. |
| 18V524000 | 2018 | The powertrain control module's voltage regulator chip may fail, causing a stall. Remedy: replace the module. |
| 20V183000 | 2019 | Front differential pinion gears insufficiently hardened, which can cause a loss of power while driving. Remedy: replace the front differential. |
| 22V284000 | 2021 | 3.6 L engines: the EGR valve may stick open, causing an unexpected loss of drive power. Remedy: replace the EGR valve assembly. |
| 25V576000 | 2022 to 2025 | Plug-in hybrid: a software error in the hybrid control processor may result in a loss of drive power. Remedy: software update. |
| 25V766000 | 2024, 2025 | 4xe plug-in hybrid: debris inside the engine may cause engine failure, which can result in a loss of drive power and/or an engine compartment fire. Remedy: software update and block or engine replacement as necessary. |
NHTSA's records show none of these with a "do not drive" or "park outside" instruction. Each is free to the owner at a dealer. These recalls apply to specific engines and VINs, so a campaign listed for your model year may not cover your car. The 2012 and 2013 campaign was a follow-up to earlier recalls 14V530 and 15V115.
Some owners say a recalled part later failed or that a repair did not cure the problem (for example 11767448 and 11728069 above). Those are the owners' accounts. If that happens to you, report it to NHTSA and tell the dealer in writing.
What should you do if your Grand Cherokee stalls?
I am not a mechanic, and I will not guess at your car's cause. These steps come from NHTSA and common sense:
- Check for open recalls using your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Do this first, because the recalls above are free.
- Write down the date, mileage, speed, weather, any warning messages and what the car did. Photos or a video of the dashboard help.
- Ask the dealer to check for open recalls and for manufacturer service bulletins for your engine, and ask for the result in writing.
- If a stall happens again after a recall repair, report it at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. Reports are how the complaint counts in this guide exist.
- If the car loses power in traffic, switch on the hazard lights, steer to the shoulder and call for help. Do not keep driving a car that has stalled repeatedly.
If you are buying a used Grand Cherokee, look up the VIN for open recalls before you view it, and compare the model year with the table above. The car problem lookup shows the complaints for other models too.
How this guide was made
The numbers come from NHTSA owner complaints and NHTSA recall records, matched to this symptom by the complaint text, with a data cut dated 27 October 2026. Quotes are as filed; only capitalisation of all-caps text is changed. Method details are on the methodology page.
