Volkswagen Jetta stalling problems: what 391 owners reported
Owners filed 391 complaints with NHTSA describing the Volkswagen Jetta stalling, losing power or shutting off while driving. That is 13.4% of the 2,923 complaints on file for the model. The reports cover model years 2012 to 2024, with the largest groups from the 2013 (103 reports) and 2019 (95 reports) model years.
NHTSA's recall data as of 27 October 2026 has no recall that matches this symptom for the Jetta. Some owners do cite recalls in their own complaints, and those are covered below. Three of the 391 reports mention a crash, none mention a fire, and the reports list 3 injuries in total. If this is not your case, read the full Volkswagen Jetta problem report.

- If the car loses power in traffic, get to a safe place and call for help.
Which Volkswagen Jetta years have the most stalling complaints?
| Model year | Reports | All complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 0 | 6 | 0% |
| 2025 | 0 | 30 | 0% |
| 2024 | 2 | 46 | 4.3% |
| 2023 | 5 | 43 | 11.6% |
| 2022 | 5 | 43 | 11.6% |
| 2021 | 5 | 70 | 7.1% |
| 2020 | 4 | 54 | 7.4% |
| 2019 | 95 | 549 | 17.3% |
| 2018 | 4 | 32 | 12.5% |
| 2017 | 15 | 160 | 9.4% |
| 2016 | 11 | 162 | 6.8% |
| 2015 | 16 | 197 | 8.1% |
| 2014 | 58 | 407 | 14.3% |
| 2013 | 103 | 597 | 17.3% |
| 2012 | 68 | 527 | 12.9% |
Two clusters stand out: 2012 to 2014 together account for 229 of the 391 reports, and 2019 alone adds 95. The 2013 and 2019 model years both have about 17% of their complaints about stalling or power loss. The 2015 to 2018 years have far fewer reports, between 4 and 16 each. The newest years have little data so far because those cars have had less time on the road, so a low count there says little either way.
What do Jetta owners describe?
Owners describe several different situations, and the complaint text does not point to one cause. Here is what they wrote, grouped by what the car did.
Transmission-like loss of power. Several reports describe the car losing drive on the road. One 2014 owner wrote: "I was driving down the Highway at 65 miles per hour when my vehicle suddenly appeared to go into neutral and I lost power in the middle lane and almost was rear-ended" (complaint 11649963). The same owner says the symptoms are consistent with recall 34J6 but their VIN shows no pending recalls. A 2013 owner (complaint 11689309) also names recall code 34J6 and writes that the car "is not drive able". Another 2013 report (complaint 11591364) describes a transmission "stuck in 6th gear" and cites NHTSA campaign 19V866.
Stalling shortly after starting, with warnings. A 2019 owner reported "a sudden engine stall shortly after starting" with the message "Starter system faulty, please service vehicle" and fault code P253200 (complaint 11751931). They say the failure mirrors Volkswagen recall 28H7 / NHTSA campaign 23V604 but their VIN is excluded from the recall.
Charging and electrical. A 2012 owner wrote that the car "would just shut off while driving due to dead battery" (complaint 11658596). A 2020 owner (complaint 11763364) says the dealer found the ground wire for the electrical harness "severely overheated", and the car would not restart.
Loss of power with engine running. A 2015 owner described "loss of power while driving, where the engine RPM increases but the vehicle does not accelerate properly, especially when driving uphill" (complaint 11711278), after the camshaft recall 23R1 and software update 24DR were done. A 2016 owner wrote that the car "lost power, ability to accelerate and went into limp mode" and "EPC code went on" (complaint 11711696). A 2024 owner reported the car "suddenly lost throttle response" on a 65 mph highway and "appeared to operate normally" after being turned off for 10 minutes (complaint 11767193).
Fuel leaks. A 2018 owner wrote: "Engine stalled and car emitted fuel smell and leaked from engine area" and the mechanic found a loose fuel rail (complaint 11648748). A 2017 owner described a fuel rail that "came loose" after an earlier fuel rail recall had been done (complaint 11603938).
Across all 391 reports, the components named are Engine (192), Electrical System (118), Power Train (109), Fuel/Propulsion System (60), Fuel System (29) and Vehicle Speed Control (19). Reports can name more than one component. These are owner statements to NHTSA, not confirmed findings.
Is there a recall for stalling on the Jetta?
No. NHTSA's recall data for these model years has no recall matching stalling or power loss as of the brief date, 27 October 2026. Recalls for other parts may still apply to your car, and owners above mention several campaign numbers (34J6, 19V866, 23V604, 23R1, 24DR) that apply only to the VINs the recall covers. Use your own VIN to find out. You can look it up at NHTSA recalls, and the Jetta problem report lists the recalls on file for the model.
What should you do if your Jetta stalls or loses power?
- If the car loses power in traffic, put the hazard lights on, steer to the shoulder or a safe place and call for help. Do not keep driving a car that stalls repeatedly.
- Check open recalls for your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Write down the date, mileage, speed, weather, any warning message and what the car did, and keep any fault codes the dealer reads.
- Ask a Volkswagen dealer to check for open recalls and manufacturer service bulletins that apply to your VIN.
- Report the problem at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. Reports are how patterns like the ones above get noticed.
I am not a mechanic, and I would not guess at the cause from a symptom alone. The reports above show very different situations with the same end result.
How this guide was made
The numbers come from NHTSA owner complaints for the Volkswagen Jetta, matched to this symptom by the text of each complaint, with the data dated 27 October 2026. A complaint is an owner's description, not a verified diagnosis. See the methodology for how reports are matched and counted.
