UK DVSAReplace the Engine Starter Motor Recall R/2026/054 · Mar 2, 2026 · built Aug 2020 to May 2025 · Risk and fix

Risk: The Safety Recall relates to the engine starter motor. The fault relates to the RSW22 starter RWT (reinforced water tightness). It was found that with RWT starters an increased abrasion of the magnetic contact can cause the growth of deposits at the lowest point of the relay interior. This in turn may increase the relay contact resistance resulting in false starts or even causing short circuits and possibly a thermal reaction. In case of a short circuit the possibility of a thermal event cannot be excluded. This may happen while attempting to start the vehicle or while driving due to vibrations causing a short circuit due to moving deposits.

Fix: On the affected vehicles the starter motor will be replaced with a variant by another supplier with a different design. Until the repair has been completed it is recommended to not leave the vehicle running unattended after starting the engine.

These deposits may increase relay contact resistance, leading to starting failures or short circuits. If a short circuit occurs, either when attempting to start the vehicle or while driving due to vibration-related movement of the deposits, it could cause a thermal event and increase the risk of fire. Driving on Interstate I-287 around 10:35am on October 10, 2025 (New Jersey) around Exit 47 (vicinity) suddenly the sunroof sounded like an explosion. Parked on the roadside ... noticed that the roof is exploded (broken pieces of the glasses were pointing upwards like a volcano) and other broken pieces were captured on the sunscreen liner cloth sliding which was completely closed from inside. Called the insurance and reported as if something hit the roof or not sure what happened. My friends tells me that there have been many such incidents when the sunroof explodes on BMWs, and specifically…

The rear cross traffic alert system is a major safety issue on my 2024 BMW M340i. It basically does not operate. To get any kind of notification that there is a vehicle approaching from either right or left if you are backing up the approaching vehicle has to be traveling at a speed greater than 7 mph and then you only get an alert within 2 seconds of impact. This is a pointless operation as then it is too late to avoid a collision. The window is to narrow to provide any useful alert and safety function. Also, I receive no alert if a pedestrian should be walking behind the vehicle nor a small…

Counts are a starting point, not a verdict: popular models collect more complaints because more of them are on the road, and NHTSA does not verify individual reports. To see whether a recall is still open on your car, enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (U.S.) or your registration at check-vehicle-recalls.service.gov.uk (UK). Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA; complaints are what trigger investigations and recalls.
