Is the 2020 BMW X4 recalled in the UK or Europe?

Recalls issued by the UK's DVSA and through the EU's Safety Gate system that cover this model and build period. European models can differ from U.S. ones, and "years estimated" means the recall gave no build dates, so confirm your own car with your registration or VIN.

UK DVSAReplace the Engine Starter Motor Recall R/2026/054 ยท Mar 2, 2026 ยท built Aug 2020 to May 2025 ยท Risk and fix

Risk: The Safety Recall relates to the engine starter motor. The fault relates to the RSW22 starter RWT (reinforced water tightness). It was found that with RWT starters an increased abrasion of the magnetic contact can cause the growth of deposits at the lowest point of the relay interior. This in turn may increase the relay contact resistance resulting in false starts or even causing short circuits and possibly a thermal reaction. In case of a short circuit the possibility of a thermal event cannot be excluded. This may happen while attempting to start the vehicle or while driving due to vibrations causing a short circuit due to moving deposits.

Fix: On the affected vehicles the starter motor will be replaced with a variant by another supplier with a different design. Until the repair has been completed it is recommended to not leave the vehicle running unattended after starting the engine.

2020 BMW X4: questions owners ask

Is the 2020 BMW X4 reliable?

NHTSA data alone cannot rate reliability, but it shows what owners reported. Owners filed 15 complaints with NHTSA about the 2020 BMW X4; the most common categories were electrical system (4, 26.7%), air bags (3, 20%), suspension (3, 20%). There are 10 safety recalls. 1 complaint mentions a crash.

What are the most common problems with the 2020 BMW X4?

Across 15 owner complaints filed with NHTSA, the categories mentioned most often are electrical system (26.7% of complaints), air bags (20% of complaints), suspension (20% of complaints), seat belts (13.3% of complaints), engine (6.7% of complaints). One complaint can name several components.

Does the 2020 BMW X4 have any recalls?

Yes. NHTSA lists 10 recalls for the 2020 BMW X4; the most recent (campaign 25V636000, 2025-09-23) concerns Electrical System: Starter Assembly: Relay. 2 recalls carry a "do not drive" or "park outside" warning from the manufacturer. Recall repairs are free at a franchised dealer; check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Check your own X4

Counts are a starting point, not a verdict: popular models collect more complaints because more of them are on the road, and NHTSA does not verify individual reports. To see whether a recall is still open on your car, enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (U.S.) or your registration at check-vehicle-recalls.service.gov.uk (UK). Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA; complaints are what trigger investigations and recalls.
