How often does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class fail its MOT?
Why they failed: the share of failed tests with at least one fault in each area (a test can fail on several). Cars first registered in 2020, tested in Great Britain in 2023; first registration is usually, but not always, the model year. Source: DVSA anonymised MOT tests and results, Open Government Licence v3.0.
What do 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class owners report?
12 of the 24 complaints, the most recent for the most-reported components, as the owners wrote them. NHTSA removes names and VINs; long reports are trimmed. CarHooq has not verified individual claims.
The contact owns a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-450. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed and there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The dealer was contacted by phone and made aware of the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was confirmed and was associated with an unrepaired recall. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V216000 (Power Train); however, the part was not yet available. The manufacturer was contacted by phone and made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was…
The contact owns a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E450 4Matic. While the contact’s son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle unexpectedly slowed down and failed to properly accelerate. The contact's son attempted to shift into reverse; however, the transmission was making an abnormal grinding sound. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed with drivetrain and engine damage, catalytic converter failure, and a bolt had snapped or was loose. The contact stated that the dealer related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V216000 (POWER TRAIN). The vehicle…
My 2020 E450 has not been serviced on schedule due to Mercedes-Benz of Indianapolis and its service manger banning and blacklisting me for months. This service department would not allow my vehicle to be serviced under a prepaid maintenance and wheel and tire plan, and most importantly my vehicle's warranty. When I went there for an appointment, a flat tire, or help with my vehicle, they kicked me out, verbally harassed and threatened me because I did not pay the deductible on a loaner vehicle because my signature was forged to submit a false claim. I have had problems with my vehicle, but…
Back up camera not functioning. Emblem cover will not retract. Must use key fob or electronic controls to open the trunk.
Rear glass window on convertible soft top is prematurely separating/delaminating from top assembly on 2020 Mercedes-Benz E350 convertible with under 8,000 miles. Glass is integrated into the convertible top and failure may lead to reduced rear visibility, possible glass detachment, water intrusion, and safety hazard while driving. This appears premature and inconsistent with expected vehicle life.
The AC compressor failed in traffic causing the engine to lock up and not restart.
The contact owns a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-450. The contact stated that while attempting to reverse, the rearview camera became inoperative. The contact stated that the rearview camera image was frozen. The contact also expressed concerns that the emblem located on the rear of the vehicle was intermittently blocking the rearview image. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
The Engine Electrical harness is completely corroded after only 50,000 miles requiring a 4k+ repair. Oil leaking from the camshaft sensor pushed it way all throughout harness. There are no warnings as it will only be noticeable after doing routine maintenance OUTSIDE of the manufactures warranty. While driving you may lose complete power or slight power loss due to engine misfiring and low system voltage. Warranty company has denied my claim saying that it looks as if the car was in an accident with water damage but the car is pristine and accident free. This is happening to all Mercedes with…
Over the last couple of days, my car has displayed the "Engine Warning" message intermittently. I took this to the dealership for inspection and received the following fault code: P06DA00 - Inoperative Oil Pump Valve. For a car with low mileage, this could potentially be a car issue. The estimated total cost for labor and parts is over $5k. I think there are more cars affected.
The contact owns a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E350. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact detected an abnormally strong fuel odor inside the vehicle. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the dealer, who determined that the fuel injector in cylinder #3 needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V961000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised…
There was smoke coming from from the engine compartment and spontaneous fire started while the car was at a stop light. The car was totally damaged. The car has less than 15000 miles driven. It is still under warranty. Information was sent to Mercedes-Benz USA with a certified mail and immediately via email from the dealership. Also was reported where the vehicle was stored if they wanted to investigate the engine. Benz USA just wanted me to fill out their standard report form. The towing company also told me that they had to tow another Benz not long ago from engine fire.
The driver front tire was found to have failed at the time of an oil change at approximately 15,000 miles. The tire was torn at the junction of the sidewall and tread in several areas. This tire is no longer available. No incident occurred. The passenger front tire was found to have the same defect when I performed a seasonal tire change but the conditions were worse at approximately 17,000 miles. No incident occurred. The tire will be taken to the dealer for inspection. Photos of this tire attached. 245/35 R20 95Y

NHTSA data alone cannot rate reliability, but it shows what owners reported. Owners filed 24 complaints with NHTSA about the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class; the most common categories were engine (7, 29.2%), back over prevention (4, 16.7%), power train (4, 16.7%). There is 1 safety recall. 2 mention a fire, 4 injuries were reported.
What are the most common problems with the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

One complaint can name several components.
Does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class have any recalls?
Yes. NHTSA lists 1 recall for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class; the most recent (campaign 26V216000, 2026-04-03) concerns Power Train: Driveline: Universal Joint. Recall repairs are free at a franchised dealer; check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Check your own E-Class
Counts are a starting point, not a verdict: popular models collect more complaints because more of them are on the road, and NHTSA does not verify individual reports. To see whether a recall is still open on your car, enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (U.S.) or your registration at check-vehicle-recalls.service.gov.uk (UK). Had a safety problem? Report it to NHTSA; complaints are what trigger investigations and recalls.
