VEHICLE STALLED WHEN DRIVEN OR STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT. ABNORMAL NOISES COMING FROM ENGINE. WHEN ENGINE OIL WAS CHECKED, NO VISIBLE OIL WAS AVAILABLE IN THE DIPSTICK. INSERTED DIPSTICK A COUPLE OF TIMES TO ENSURE CORRECT MEASUREMENT. EXTREMELY LOW OIL LEFT IN VEHICLE. VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE BURNING OIL. DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES READ BY OBD2 TOOL WERE: P0011,P0191,P228D,P0089 AND P0014. WHEN INVESTIGATING ONLINE, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW BEING IGNORED BY THE OEM.
Vehicle has 53k miles. I have had the error code p0011 (camshaft, vvt bank 1 too advanced) for most of the time I've had this car. Spend thousands at a certified dealership to get this issue fixed, only for it to pop up again. I was told the solution for this code is a new engine. This was after I spend thousands and my power train warranty expired. Oil changes and Routine maintenance were all done in timely manner. This engine was built to fail.
GMC Terrain with 12,564 total miles had experienced an engine failure. Under normal driving conditions, the car was sluggish and would not accelerate properly when pulling out into traffic or when getting on the freeway/interstate causing fear for driver safety and causing traffic slowdowns or congestion with a significantly increased risk of crash. While driving to work, the vehicle service engine light turned on and displayed "reduced engine power". Upon investigation the dealership found codes P0011, P0014, P0016, P0017, and quoted "Cylinder 4 intake rocker had fallen off and laying on head, found excessive debris and metal material around rocker 4, Found cylinder 2 intake rocker to be…

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 6.2L V8 (RPO L87), built November 2020. Mileage at failure: 11268. On XXX the check engine light came on with DTCs P0011 and P0016. The engine developed a rattle at startup and when lifting off the throttle around 40 mph. On XXX Fowler Chevrolet ([XXX]) isolated the abnormal engine noise to the crankshaft bearings. Cutting open the oil filter showed excessive bearing material. The dealer advised engine replacement before complete engine failure and quoted $12,561.66. This is the same failure described in recall 25V-274 (GM N252494000): crankshaft/connecting rod bearing failure in the L87 engine, which can cause loss of propulsion while driving. My VIN…
P0011: questions drivers ask
What does code P0011 mean?
P0011 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "'A' Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 22 car models.
Which cars get code P0011 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0011 is mentioned most for the Chevrolet Equinox (14), Chevrolet Sonic (6), GMC Terrain (5), across 22 models and model years 2012 to 2024. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0011?
No NHTSA recall text names P0011 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0011?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0011 (including sub-code forms such as P001177). The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
