Vehicle began sputtering suddenly while driving 40mph. "Reduced Engine Power" warning appeared on dash. While trying to limp it home, the vehicle died in the middle of a turning lane. Pushed vehicle to the side of the road and had it towed to a shop. Their notes attached below. Technician Notes: Customer concern verified with DTCs P0014 (Exhaust Camshaft Position System Performance) and P0017 (Exhaust Camshaft Position Not Plausible). Upon removing the exhaust cam position sensor, metal buildup was found. The vacuum pump failed, breaking the keyed driveshaft on the cam and causing the metal buildup. Recommendation: Replace the vacuum pump and exhaust camshaft with timing chains, or consider…
On XXX while driving my 2018 GMC Terrain SLE 1.5L turbo on the highway at approximately 70 MPH near [XXX]. I experienced a sudden loss of power brake assist without any prior dashboard warning lights or messages. I was traveling with children to [XXX] for a youth wrestling tournament, approximately 5 hours from my residence. The brake pedal became extremely hard to press, requiring excessive force to slow the vehicle while traveling at highway speeds. I was transporting children at the time, creating a serious safety concern. Because I was away from home and needed to get the children to their scheduled wrestling weigh-ins, I arranged alternative transportation through Enterprise. I was…
Vehicle was being driven at 60 mph on the highway when the brakes weren't responding as I was entering a sharp curve. Had to stand on the brakes and manually lower the gears to keep from hitting a tree head-on. Check engine light was on. P0014, P0017, and P0556 codes were pulled before having it towed to the first mechanic. Car wouldn't start after it was parked after the initial incident. The first mechanic was unable to diagnose so the vehicle was towed to the Chevrolet Dealership. They say the brake vacuum pump malfunctioned and caused permanent damage to the engine rendering the car inoperable and I will have to have a new engine installed. The car drove fine prior to the vacuum pump…
MY HUSBAND AND I WENT TO THE STORE WITH OUR TWO KIDS JUST TO GRAB SOME GROCERIES. WE LIVE LESS THAN 5 MILES FROM THE GROCERY STORE. ON OUR WAY HOME THE CAR STARTED SHAKING WHILE IDLING AND ACTED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL OUT ON US. WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION WHEN THE CAR DECIDED TO START SPUTTERING, SHAKING VIOLENTLY AND THEN SHUT OFF. THANKFULLY ENOUGH WE WERE ABLE TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED. AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS THE CAR FINALLY STARTED BACK UP. WE WERE NOT ABLE TO GO ABOVE 20 MPH. WE FOUND OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP WENT OUT SO WE SPENT THE $300 TO REPLACE THAT. ONCE THAT WAS REPLACED WE THOUGHT WE WERE IN THE CLEAR. ABOUT TWO DAYS LATER…

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 TO 45 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS FIRM. The specific component or system has not fully failed. However, my vehicle is currently experiencing an intermittent check engine light condition, turning off and on, which was diagnosed at a Retailer producing code P0018 then at the dealership and produced code P0017. The codes relate to the engine control module (ECM) detects that the camshaft on is out of sync with the crankshaft resulting in misaligned engine timing. I have requested that the dealership further review and escalate the diagnosis to determine whether the issue aligns with any known concerns, Technical Service Bulletins, or manufacturer-supported programs. P0017: questions drivers ask
What does code P0017 mean?
P0017 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 14 car models.
Which cars get code P0017 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0017 is mentioned most for the Chevrolet Equinox (11), GMC Terrain (6), Chevrolet Malibu (5), across 14 models and model years 2012 to 2023. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0017?
No NHTSA recall text names P0017 directly. 2 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0017?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0017 (including sub-code forms such as P001762). The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
