Vehicle is my wife’s car. Vehicle lost acceleration during rapid acceleration attempts (freeway on-ramps, etc.). Threw engine light with P0087 code (Low fuel rail pressure). Brought to local dealer to diagnose and was told the diverter valve failed, which caused the water pump to leak and then caused transmission to overheat. The total quote for repairs was over $8,900. None of this made sense. Did a static pressure test for over 45 minutes on coolant system and never lost pressure. That told me the water pump wasn’t leaking. Decided to replace high pressure fuel pump and upon replacing found that the spring on the pump had wore down and punched a hole in the tappet that goes to the…
This vehicle was subject to NHTSA Recall 22V-767 / Stellantis Recall Z96 for a defective Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) known to fail and release metal debris into the fuel system. The recall remedy (HPFP replacement) was performed at an authorized Stellantis/Ram dealership on 3/29/2024. On 8/9/2026, while driving the vehicle suddenly lost engine power and blocked the road in the left lane. The vehicle failed to restart and needed to be towed. The vehicle was independently inspected at Saddleback Automotive Service Center, Santa Ana, CA (RO# 130026). The technician documented diagnostic trouble codes P0087 (fuel pressure governor deviation, low pressure), P025C (fuel pump module…
After a 3 hour drive I had parked curb-side on a busy street to go into a store. I returned within 10 minutes, started the car, and as I was pulling out into traffic the car stalled after moving about 20 feet. All the dash lights came on and it would crank but not start. The car is in the right lane of a busy 3 lane road at this time. Also, after it stopped rolling it put itself in PARK, and because it has electronic transmission selection, I could not get it into Neutral to push it out of the way without the engine running. . The situation was very perilous. A wrecker came and got the car home. Once home I pulled the OBD codes myself and found P0087 Low Fuel Pressure and P008A also Low Fuel…
THIS IS A REOCCURRING ISSUE WITH THE DIRECT FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM (GDI). THE HIGH PRESSURE PUMP IS GROUND INTO THE TOP OF THE CAMSHAFT CAM AND CAUSING FUEL RAIL FAILURE, ENGINE CODES P0087 & P219A. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPAIRED THIS ONCE UNDER WARRANTY. FORD REFUSES TO REPAIR AGAIN, SINCE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED WHILE WE WERE IN STATE LOCKDOWN ORDER. THIS GDI DIRECT FUEL INJECTION VS. MULTI-PORT INJECTION WAS RUSHED TO MARKET TO MEET THE NEW FUEL ECONOMY MANDATES SET BY CONGRESS AND IT HAS FAILED ON THIS VEHICLE 3 TIMES NOW, CAUSING SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. FMC WONT REPAIR AGAIN EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW OF THIS SYSTEMIC ISSUE. I AM ATTACHING A COPY OF THE DIAGNOSTICS FROM FORD WITH THE…
My Bosch CP4 fuel pump failed causing my engine to stall while turning at a very busy/fast intersection. This can occur at speed without any warning of sudden failure, putting everyone on the road at risk. Fault code P0087 and P0191 were present, along with a flashing glow plug. Following EA No.: EA11-003 I removed the fuel metering valve and observed and documented metal shavings. The failed component is still installed on my vehicle as I will be having it serviced shortly. The fact that this same component has been recalled very recently in many domestic trucks, but not in the 600,000 VW/Audi vehicles it is installed in is concerning. EA No.: EA11-003 Date Opened: 7-Feb-2011 Date Closed…
The fuel system has failed. The car shut off in the Baltimore harbor tunnel twice completely stopping traffic and creating a very hazard situation. One of those two times the semi truck behind me had to slam its brakes. When the car shuts off you must come to a complete stop and turn the car completely off. After restarting the car is in limp mode with reduced power. The incident has happened about 6 other times. Every time it happens I have feared my safety, especially if there is no shoulder to coast the car in to park. Independent service center has replaced three sensors related to fuel pressure system which did not fix. The vehicle and component has not been inspected by manufacture…
Good afternoon, 1.5 weeks ago, we had 4 serious issues that our Ford F250 Truck from 2017 with 55.000 miles on stalled during driving almost causing an accident because the steering system was not supporting anymore. We stopped the vehicle on the side of the road, yellow engine light came on with the fault message “All sensor” (attached). After several times cycling the ignition the Diesel engine started up with the yellow engine light on. This happened 4x. Luckily, we made it home. The next day the truck did not show any ignition neither did the engine start. I checked the battery power which was 12.8V and found a loose minus bar connection beside the positive bar beside the battery…
Failed Component & Availability for Inspection: The Bosch CP4 high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failed internally, shedding metallic debris throughout the entire fuel system. This matches the exact defect in NHTSA Recall 24V-957 and Ford Safety Recalls 24S78 and 26S17. The failing CP4 pump and eight injectors were replaced on 03/14/2026 (Eastpointe Invoice #5997) due to contamination. The truck is located at Bob Maxey Ford in Detroit, MI, and is available for inspection alongside work orders from an authorized Ford dealership and two independent facilities. Safety Risk: The failure caused an abrupt, total loss of motive power on an active highway off-ramp, followed by an immediate no-start…
THE CAR ISN'T DRIVABLE. WHEN I START IT IT MAKES CLICKING NOISE AND HARD TO START. IF DRIVING IT, IT DOESN'T GIVE ANY GAS OR GO OVER 20 MILES. IT SOMETIMES SHUT OFF AND SOMETIMES HAVE A HARD TIME DRIVING FOWARD. CODES P0087, P0783, P2872, COMES UP ON A DIAGNOSTIC. THAT'S DRIVING ON A STREET AND CAN'T DRIVE ON HIGHWAY ANYMORE.
The check engine came on as I was driving to work the other morning, and when I got back in the car to head home for the night, my car wouldn't start at all. I have a failed High Pressure Fuel Pump system. I used my own OBD-II code reader, and got back code P0087. This issue is connected to the FCA Z46 recall issued in June 2022. The previous owner/dealership performed the service for this specific recall in May 2024 and was marked as complete. I became the current owner of this Jeep in October 2024, just 5 months after the recall was completed. I have personally driven this vehicle for only 20,000 miles since I took over ownership, which means that the new replacement parts covered under…
P0087: questions drivers ask
What does code P0087 mean?
P0087 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 29 car models.
Which cars get code P0087 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0087 is mentioned most for the Ford Escape (8), Ram 1500 (5), Alfa Romeo Giulia (4), across 29 models and model years 2012 to 2025. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0087?
No NHTSA recall text names P0087 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Fuel/Propulsion System); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0087?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0087 (including sub-code forms such as P008700). The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
