CAR STALLS WHILE IDLING. THE RPM'S AND THE BATTERY GAUGE GO UP AND DOWN WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAY. IT HAS ALSO BEEN WARM AND COLD WEATHER. THE CAR WILL REDUCE SPEED ON IT'S OWN WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING. THE VEHICLE DRIVES ROUGH AND THE ENGINE SOUNDS HARSH. ORIGINALLY ENGINE LIGHT CODES OF P0174 AND P0171 CAME ON AND DEALERSHIP CLEANED AIR FLOW. NOW NO CODES AND DEALER ISN'T ABLE TO ALWAYS RECREATE. I HAVE BROUGHT TO DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES FOR SAME ISSUE. OWNED VEHICLE LESS THAN 90 DAYS.
The 2017 Pacifica will sometimes have a lack of power when trying to accelerate, and/or will jerk or shutter. Other times, mainly when the engine is warm, it will shutter and die when starting the engine. Sometimes it will take two or three restart attempts for the engine to remain running. In one instance in slow moving stop and go traffic the vehicle stuttered and then accelerated toward the car in front and I had to slam on the brakes to prevent a collision. The vehicle has been back at the dealer multiple times and they claim there are not any codes they can use to diagnose the problem. Even when the engine dies it does not cause the check engine light to come on. When they scan the…
Ongoing issues with rough idle. Threw a couple generic lean codes (p0171 and p0174) that did not stay. Stored code p061a:00-28. On my third dealer. Vehicle randomly shut off at stop sign with no codes thrown whatsoever. Tech believes the issue is the throttlebody. Ford Corp says it passes their tests and will not warranty the replacement. Ford Corp Basically said I have to wait till total part failure. Shutting off in traffic is obviously dangerous.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 GMC TERRAIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SERVICE ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD. IN ADDITION, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SHORTED OUT DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE, WHICH ALSO CAUSED ALL THE GAUGES AND WARNING INDICATORS NOT TO FUNCTION. THE DEALER (CARLSBAD BUICK GMC CADILLAC, 5334 PASEO DEL NORTE, CARLSBAD, CA 92008, (760) 438-5311) WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE DEALER FOUND DIAGNOSTIC FAILURE CODES P0496, P0171, AND P0174, WHICH DETECTED PRESSURE IN THE EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM. THE DEALER STATED THAT MORE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WOULD BE NEEDED TO DETERMINE A REMEDY. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO SUBURBAN CADILLAC OF COSTA MESA (2600 HARBOR…

WHILE DRIVING AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 25 TO 30 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED. THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES IN THE SAME DAY. IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN AT RANDOM UP UNTIL THE PRESENT USUALLY WHEN COASTING OR TURNING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT 2,307 MILES AND CODES P0171 AND P0174 WERE FOUND AND BOTH OXYGEN SENSORS WERE REPLACED. THREE DAYS AFTER REPAIR TRUCK CONTINUES TO STALL. HAS BEEN IN FOR SERVICE FIVE TIMES AND NO OTHER REPAIRS MADE BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS NOT COME ON AGAIN. INVOICE SHOWS THAT THERE IS A STORED CODE, P0884, BUT SINCE IT IS NOT ACTIVE THEY WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED OR PAID TO REPAIR THE TRUCK. THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS…
P0174: questions drivers ask
What does code P0174 mean?
P0174 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "System Too Lean". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 7 car models.
Which cars get code P0174 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0174 is mentioned most for the Chevrolet Traverse (1), Chrysler Pacifica (1), Ford Flex (1), across 7 models and model years 2013 to 2023. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0174?
No NHTSA recall text names P0174 directly. 3 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0174?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0174. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
