What happened when owners saw P0304?
10 of the 182 reports, spread across the models above, as the owners wrote them. NHTSA removes names and VINs; long reports are trimmed. CarHooq has not verified individual claims.
Apparently my 2018 Ford Escape 1.5 liter Ecoboost engine has a known flaw of coolant intrusion into the cylinders. It can be inspected right now as it's at the Ford service center. This problem could have left me on the side of the freeway at night. Ford service has verified the problem and that it needs a new engine. I dont believe the parts have been inspected by anyone other than Ford service and my independent mechanic. There was a check engine light that came on back in April of this year. I brought it into Ford for basic minor service on April 29 and was told to check diagnostics I had to pay $298. I took it elsewhere and they told me it was a code that came up for the smog system. I…
My 2016 Ford Edge equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine developed a check engine light and began producing white smoke from the exhaust after sitting overnight. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Ford dealership for diagnosis. The Ford technician performed a self-test and found diagnostic trouble codes P0304 and P0316 stored in the PCM. The dealer pressure-tested the cooling system, removed the cylinder 4 spark plug for inspection, and confirmed coolant intrusion into cylinder 4. The dealer then searched Ford's OASIS system and identified Ford TSB 22-2229, which calls for replacement of the engine long block for this condition. The dealership has recommended long-block engine…
My 2019 Ford Fusion 2.0L EcoBoost (89,000 miles) experienced a sudden, severe engine malfunction due to a known manufacturing defect. The vehicle exhibited severe engine shuddering and a harsh cold-start misfire upon ignition. A diagnostic scan revealed trouble codes P0316 (Misfire on Startup), P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire), and P0304 (Cylinder 4 Misfire). A mechanic verified that these codes are the result of internal coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders, exactly as documented in Ford Technical Service Bulletin TSB 19-2346. The structural design flaw in the engine block allows engine coolant to breach the cylinder head gasket area and pool inside the combustion chambers. This presents a…
Year: 2022 Make: Chevrolet Model: Silverado 1500 Engine: 2.7L TurboMax (L3B) VIN: [XXX] Mileage at Failure: 119,139 Description of Problem: 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7L L3B TurboMax engine is completely inoperable due to Cylinder 4 exhaust roller follower failure causing exhaust camshaft failure and bent exhaust valves. Vehicle shakes severely, will not accelerate, check engine light on, and has gone into limp mode. Diagnostic codes P0304 (Cylinder 4 misfire) and P2101 (electronic throttle actuator fault triggered by engine shaking and limp mode) were recorded. All external components including spark plugs, coils, and injector harnesses were inspected and ruled out as causes. Failure…
My Jeep began misfiring, giving a P0304 error code via the ODB. On June 2nd 2025, we took it to the Sandy Sansing CDJR Dealership. They determined that my 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine needed a new camshaft and lifters, despite having only 42,609 miles on it. To further complicate things, it took the dealership over a month to get a replacement camshaft in and installed, due to an abnormally high demand for replacement camshafts; this suggests a systemic problem with the engine, especially considering the problematic history of earlier versions of the 3.6L Pentastar V6 (1). https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/MC-10069161-0335.pdf
My Engin light went on code was P0304 cylinder 4 misfire.I recently replaced #4 ignition coil. Using power balance test, confirmed cylinder #4 is misfiring but only on idle. Per TSB 19-2310 , suspect #4 direct fuel injector of leaking. The dealership will not help back up this problem. Need all 6 fuel injectors replaced to make my truck SAFE to drive.my truck has the 2.7L v 6 eco boost engine. A lot of these engines have this problem, Ford as of now does not have a recall but should. This problem needs fixed before someone gets hurt. This could cause a fire.
On 7/16/26 vehicle would not start; high-pitched noise heard near engine during no-start diagnosis. Towed to Goldy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Huntington WV. Per dealer invoice #27136: blown 500-amp main battery fuse found; after jumping past fuse, white smoke from exhaust and no coolant in system, diagnosed as blown head gasket. Repair: both-side head gasket replacement plus fuse assembly. Vehicle in shop 7 weeks, returned 9/4/26 with new unresolved issue: strong smell of burned electronics and antifreeze in cabin. All failed components available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: head gasket failure/coolant intrusion caused engine hydrolock, a sudden uncommanded loss of engine power…
RECEIVE OBD ERROR CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE (P0304). MECHANICS HAVE REPLACED ALL PLUGS & IGNITION COIL ON CYLINDER 4. CEL WITH SAME ERROR CAME BACK. ROUGH IDLE AT STATIONARY POSITION. CAR AS 127K MILES ON IT. CHRYSLER EXTENDED ENGINE WARRANTIES ON 2011-2013 T&CS FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE FOR EVEN # CYLINDER HEAD MISFIRES. WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF WARRANTY COULD BE EXTENDED FOR 2014 TO FIX THIS ISSUE.
ENGINE BUCKS AND SKIPS. CODE P0302, P0304, P0306,P0863, P0152, P0175, B193. LAST EVENT OCCURRED IN DRIVEWAY AND RAN FINE AFTER DRIVING ABOUT A HALF MILE. OTHER EVENTS SIMILAR.
The 2.3L EcoBoost engine failed due to coolant leaking into the combustion chambers. The dealer found coolant present in cylinders 1 and 4, the cylinder 4 piston washed, and vertical scoring on the cylinder 4 wall. The dealer's recommendation is complete engine replacement. Yes, the engine is available for inspection. The vehicle is currently at the Ford dealership and the engine has not yet been replaced. Coolant entering the cylinders causes misfiring and loss of engine power. The vehicle shook on startup and ran roughly, and the misfire was intermittent and unpredictable. A sudden loss of motive power while driving in traffic or at highway speed is a crash risk to me and to other drivers…
P0304: questions drivers ask
What does code P0304 mean?
P0304 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 36 car models.
Which cars get code P0304 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0304 is mentioned most for the Ford Escape (57), Ford Edge (36), Ford Fusion (19), across 36 models and model years 2012 to 2025. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0304?
No NHTSA recall text names P0304 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0304?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0304 (including sub-code forms such as P030485). The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
