Ford issued TSB 22-2229 (and earlier TSB 19-2208) specifically covering 2018 2.0L EcoBoost engines with coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The Root Cause: Ford redesigned the engine block around mid-2019 because the original design allowed coolant to pool in small grooves between the cylinder bores, eventually degrading the head gasket or cracking the cylinder wall. Error code * P0316 — misfire detected during startup. Ford dealer estimate $12,700 for the Repair. A new engine block.. Ford customer care says there is no assistance available because the vehicle is out of warranty. It has 60,555 miles.

The component that has failed is the engine and it is available for inspection. The vehicle on multiple occasions has had loss of power while driving. The most recent incident was when I was driving 100 miles on interstate 81 and could not go more then 60 miles an hour. I had multiple semis and vehicles that had to go around me as the speed limit was 70. It also had severe loss of power going over mountains to go home. It also would shudder upon starting up and constantly lost antifreeze. I took the vehicle to Stuckey ford Bellefonte service shop and they confirmed coolant leaking into cylinder 2 and that it needed a new engine. They performed a multi-point vehicle inspection and a visual…

Capital Ford of Wilmington diagnosed my vehicle with coolant intrusion into cylinder 2, accompanied by diagnostic trouble codes P0302 and P0316, after check engine light came on. I have been advised that the vehicle requires a complete engine replacement, with an estimated cost of $13,180.89. The vehicle has experienced sputtering and hesitation, creating concern that it could lose power or stall. These symptoms are concerning. After researching this issue, I have learned that coolant intrusion is a documented problem associated with certain Ford vehicles equipped with the 1.5L EcoBoost engine produced during the 2017–2019 period. Ford has addressed this issue through Technical Service…

The 2.3L EcoBoost engine failed due to coolant leaking into the combustion chambers. The dealer found coolant present in cylinders 1 and 4, the cylinder 4 piston washed, and vertical scoring on the cylinder 4 wall. The dealer's recommendation is complete engine replacement. Yes, the engine is available for inspection. The vehicle is currently at the Ford dealership and the engine has not yet been replaced. Coolant entering the cylinders causes misfiring and loss of engine power. The vehicle shook on startup and ran roughly, and the misfire was intermittent and unpredictable. A sudden loss of motive power while driving in traffic or at highway speed is a crash risk to me and to other drivers…

This began in November of 2022 as an Intermittent concern. At first, it appeared that I could temporally correct by pulling over completely shutting off the truck and re-starting (re-booting) but is rapidly becoming worse and today (02/09/2023) became untenable, no matter what I did; the speedometer would not work or behaved erratically for brief periods; the information center display disappeared and then became dashes; the transmission randomly down-shits gears causing the wheels to lock up briefly or does not shift at all, causing engine RPMs to spike. While thankfully this has only occurred at speeds below 40 MPH, I feel that this is a safety concern for myself and others as operation of…

In Jan 2024 my car started running rough. In Feb 2024 I was mailed the 23V-905 recall notice. Late Feb I had the oil changed in my car. This didn't help the rough running. Mar 4 2024 a warning came on indicating "low engine oil pressure". I took it back to the oil change shop, who looked at everything, showed me it had a safe oil level...it was not dripping oil on my driveway. I was then told about the recall notice and to have it diagnosed at a dealership. Every dealer I called advised it an advance notice only, it's okay to drive my car, until parts are available - In July. I called Ford who gave me a service ticket CAS48387851. My dealership did a diagnosis and said there is metal in the…

P0316: questions drivers ask

What does code P0316 mean?

P0316 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 11 car models.

Which cars get code P0316 most often?

In NHTSA owner complaints, P0316 is mentioned most for the Ford Escape (70), Ford Edge (47), Ford Fusion (21), across 11 models and model years 2014 to 2024. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.

Is there a recall for code P0316?

No NHTSA recall text names P0316 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What should I do if my car shows P0316?

Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.

How this page was made

CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0316. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
