2016 Ford Focus with 53,000 miles, driven less than 150 miles per week on average just getting back and forth to work and running errands. Check engine light came on on November 2, 2023. I got a P0344 code from my mechanic who is 5 minutes away from when the check engine light came on. He advised me not to drive the vehicle until he could get my car in on November 7. When I started the car to take it to the mechanic on the evening of November 6 for him to look at the next day, the oil light came on. It was a 5 minute drive from my home to the auto shop. He immediately said Oh, Oh, that's the bad oil light not the low oil light. I have routinely kept up with the recommended maintenance…
In Jan 2024 my car started running rough. In Feb 2024 I was mailed the 23V-905 recall notice. Late Feb I had the oil changed in my car. This didn't help the rough running. Mar 4 2024 a warning came on indicating "low engine oil pressure". I took it back to the oil change shop, who looked at everything, showed me it had a safe oil level...it was not dripping oil on my driveway. I was then told about the recall notice and to have it diagnosed at a dealership. Every dealer I called advised it an advance notice only, it's okay to drive my car, until parts are available - In July. I called Ford who gave me a service ticket CAS48387851. My dealership did a diagnosis and said there is metal in the…

THEY SAID THAT IT HAS PCM UPDATE AND THAT THEY PERFORMED THE PCM UPDATE AGAIN AND CLEARED CODES TO SEE IF THEY WOULD COME BACK. I was driving on the highway and my car started to jerk when I accelerated and hit the brakes. I pulled over to see what was wrong with the car. It hesitated to start back up and when it did it stalled. My ESC light came on and my engine light came on before I pulled over. I was stuck on the side of a busy highway with a car that almost caused an accident when it jerked. Took the car to AutoZone for a diagnostics check and got 3 error codes, P0344, P0128, and C121C-00. Was informed that there are similar issues being reported about cars of the same year, make, and model that was not included in a 2016-2017 recall and that there is an open investigation referring to the camshaft sensor being…

AS I BEGIN TO PULL INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC, I HEAR AND SEE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WARNING ALONG WITH THE SKID CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATING. THE CAR THEN STALLS LEAVING ME SITTING IN 70 MPH TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE STARTS BACK UP BUT HAS A NOTICEABLE LOSS OF POWER. THIS LOSS OF POWER CONTINUED UNTIL I GOT HOME. WHEN I FINALLY GET HOME I USE A CODE READER WHICH INDICATED IT WAS A CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. CODE P0344. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH WORSE INCIDENT AS THERE WERE NO MECHANICAL ISSUES LEADING UP TO THIS.
JUST FILLED MY GAS TANK UP THEN AS I LEFT THE GAS STATION GOT ABOUT 1 MILE UP THE ROAD THEN WHILE SITTING AT A STOPLIGHT I TURNED THE AC ON AND IDLE DIPPED, CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO DIE(WHICH IT DID) THEN AS I TRIED TO RE-START, CEL CAME ON AND CAR WOULD NOT START. I GET THERE AND THEY TELL ME THAT THE REASON WAS DUE TO I HAD A AFTERMARKET POWER WIRE ROUTED OVER ENGINE ASSEMBLY CAUSING ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE. SO THEY DISCONNECTED WHAT I PAYED…
P0344: questions drivers ask
What does code P0344 mean?
P0344 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit Intermittent". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 4 car models.
Which cars get code P0344 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0344 is mentioned most for the Ford Focus (3), Ford Ecosport (2), Jeep Wrangler (2), across 4 models and model years 2013 to 2018. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0344?
No NHTSA recall text names P0344 directly. 2 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0344?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0344. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
