Vehicle has difficulty starting after refuel. Vehicle stalls randomly to the point that is too much of a danger to drive. All of the symptoms correlate to recall (18S32) yet this particular vehicles vin was not listed in the list of recalled vehicles. The DTC's are as follows,P0420, P0456, P1450. Upon being serviced for the ford customer satisfaction program 24N07 it was noted by a service advisor that the replacement of a fuel tank and fuel pump was necessary which would be a reference to recall (18S32). Vehicle has active alerts for powertrain control module, and low boost pressure with the turbocharge along with emissions codes P0299, P0496 and P0456. The vehicle is constantly going into deep sleep mode. While driving the vehicle started to enter safe mode. And displayed an alert that said please turn ignition on. The dash and screen went black like vehicle was off but it was still running. This happened multiple times. My vehicle also will not start after pumping gas so I have to leave vehicle running every time I pump gas. My vehicle will not pass NY state inspection because of the recalls.

With only 32,885 miles, engine light came on due to (P0456) EVAP small leak. Went to an auto shop and Ford dealer for diagnostic scan. Both technicians found that there is a bit of smoke coming out from the top of the fuel tank due to a small stress crack at the port near the canister vent hose as well as a small crack below fuel pressure sensor tube. New fuel tank replacement was recommended as the crack could not be repaired. Cost to fix is $1,400 parts and $1,200 labor. This small crack nears the fuel tank seems to be a major concern for owners as it could increase the risk of vehicle fire and should be a recall by Ford for immediate remedy.

PURCHASED 2013 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY IN JULY OF 2020 AND IT HAD A CLEAN RECORD, WAS A FORMER CARMAX VEHICLE AND MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REVIEWED THE VEHICLE AND DEEMED IT A GOOD PURCHASE. I HAVE SINCE CARED FOR THE VEHICLE AND IT HAS RUN WELL UNTIL RECENTLY SEVERAL ERROR CODES CAME UP. P0300, P0456, P0455, P0175. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THIS COULD BE A VEHICLE MANUFACTURER ISSUE. THE CODES SAY SOMETHING ABOUT EVP LEAK, MISFIRE AND SYSTEM RUNNING TOO RICH. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED TO ENSURE A RECALL ISN'T NECESSARY. REPAIRS ARE WELL OVER $1000 AND NOT DUE TO ANY PRE EXISTING ISSUES.

According to Auto Zone, after being placed on scanner, the power train system (P0456) has a evaporative emissions system leak (very small leak) diagnosed at 76,919miles. Ford dealership says they cannot find a problem. When I put gas in the car I have to sit and wait at least 10 minutes before my car will start again. It takes a couple of tries and much hesitation, but it will start. Once you get started it has difficulty accelerating or may slow down on its own. Again, Ford dealership reports they can't seem to find a problem. When I told them the problem, they came up with a price to charge me to fix something they could not find. Ridiculous!! SO I WAS TOLD THEY CHANGED OUT SOME COMMON ITEMS THAT HAD KNOWN ISSUES AND IT SHOULD BE FIX.. AT ABOUT 37K SAME EXACT ISSUE SAME EXACT ERROR CODE SAME EXACT RESPONSE FROM THE DEALER.. BUT THIS TIME I WAS TOLD THEY JUST REPLACED THE WHOLE EVAP SYSTEM AND TO MAKE SURE I DON'T OVERFILL THE FUEL TANK.... NOW AT 54K SAME EXACT ISSUE SAME ERROR PO456 ..BUT NOW A MUCH MORE NOTICEABLE HEAVY 'FUEL' SMELL IN THE CAB ' AND I'VE BEEN VERY CAREFUL NOT TO 'OVERFILL' THE FUEL…

P0456: questions drivers ask

What does code P0456 mean?

P0456 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (very small leak)". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 34 car models.

Which cars get code P0456 most often?

In NHTSA owner complaints, P0456 is mentioned most for the Ford Focus (32), Ford Escape (10), Ford Edge (8), across 34 models and model years 2012 to 2024. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.

Is there a recall for code P0456?

No NHTSA recall text names P0456 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Fuel/Propulsion System); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What should I do if my car shows P0456?

Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.

How this page was made

CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0456. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
