What happened when owners saw P0706?

My 2016 Ford F-150 experienced an unexpected downshift into second gear at approximately 45 mph. I also experienced warning lights and an occasion when the truck would not move in Drive until I shifted again. The dealership documented P0705 and P0706 before performing a PCM software update. I retained the repair order showing those codes. After the update, the truck registered P0720. The dealership diagnosed an output speed sensor circuit fault and recommended replacing the molded leadframe for approximately $2,000. I was told replacement would not be covered unless specified transmission range sensor codes returned after the update. I am concerned that a physical defect remains in the…
The affected systems are the power train, engine, and electrical. My 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe experienced failures consistent with GM Technical Service Bulletin 21-NA-149 (engine wiring harness chafing) and the conditions outlined in Recall N232404190 (valve body failure, November 2024). Beginning in March 2025, the vehicle displayed warning lights and messages including Check Engine, Traction Control, Service Transmission, and limp mode (Reduced Acceleration – Drive with Care). The vehicle shifted erratically, lost power, and occasionally failed to accelerate, creating a serious safety hazard at highway speeds. These problems were documented at AutoNation Chevrolet South Clearwater, where…
I am driving a 2015 Ford Expedition that utilizes the 6R80 transmission. I am actively experiencing the severe, dangerous highway downshifting failure described in Ford's F-150 safety recall. The truck is throwing codes P0705, P0706, and P0707. My car will go into limp-mode and lose acceleration while driving, light up the wrench and stop displaying the gear and idle high and accelerate at half the speed. When I turn my car off, it will not turn back on until the engine has cooled off.

Component Affected: Power Train / Electrical System / Transmission Description of Incident: My 2016 Ford F-150 was taken to a licensed Ford dealership to resolve Safety Recall 26S28 / NHTSA Campaign 26V237000 (PCM software update to prevent sudden downshifts). Prior to the recall, the truck drove fine with no issues. Immediately after the software update was performed, the vehicle suffered a catastrophic, uncommanded downshift from 4th gear into 1st gear while traveling at highway speeds. This caused the rear wheels to violently lock up, mimicking a sudden slam on the brakes in active traffic and nearly causing a severe rear-end collision. Diagnostic scans show codes P0720 and P0722…
The affected components are the electrical system, engine, and power train. In March 2025, my 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe displayed multiple warning lamps across the dash, including traction control and check engine lights. The vehicle shifted erratically and sometimes entered limp mode. I brought the vehicle to AutoNation Chevrolet South Clearwater for inspection. The dealer replaced the battery, dismissed my concerns, and stated that a test drive was performed, but the mileage in and out on the invoice was identical, showing it never actually occurred. Diagnostic trouble codes (P0700, P0717, P2714, P2716, P0706, and multiple U-codes) were present but were not fully investigated. A GM Technical…
Sudden and severe downshifts occurred at roadway and highway speeds resulting in sudden speed decrease. Also revving and loss of power occurred. Problem codes P0706 & P0707 were logged which point directly to the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS), which is integrated into the molded lead frame. This sudden and uncontrolled loss of speed caused significant danger to vehicles, ocupants, and other vehicles.
Ford mailed me a XXX Customer Satisfaction Program 26N04 letter for my 2016 F-150, VIN [XXX]. That letter offered a one-time, no-charge replacement of the transmission molded lead frame if the dealer determined replacement was needed, and it described a malfunction indicator lamp and/or wrench light when that part fails. My truck did exactly that. It stored P0715 and P0717, went into limp mode, and the wrench came on. Titus-Will Ford in Tacoma confirmed the turbine speed sensor is part of the lead frame and replaced it (part AL3Z-7G276-D). They denied 26N04 because those codes are not P0705, P0706, P0707, or P1702 — a code list the customer letter never disclosed. The failed part is the part…
On 01/03/24, the vehicle stalled and smoked on the Suncoast Parkway. All dashboard warning lights and messages illuminated, and the vehicle entered emergency park mode. OnStar was contacted and the vehicle was towed to Jenkins Chevrolet in Homosassa, FL. The failure was linked to a broken pulley and belt system that damaged the ECM and wiring harness. No DTCs were pulled, and mileage in/out was 80042/80043—no test drive performed. On 08/06/24, the vehicle returned to Jenkins for a roaring noise. A pulley bearing was replaced, possibly related to the earlier failure. Again, no drivability evaluation or codes recorded. On 03/09/25, the same full system warning lights/messages appeared again…
My 2017 Ford Expedition is currently at an authorized dealership (Arlington Heights Ford, IL) for a failed transmission lead frame (DTCs P0706, P0707, P1702), which causes intermittent loss of gear engagement and sudden shift issues. This specific part is subject to NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA26001. Ford is refusing to honor the 10-year/150000-mile extended coverage (Program 19N01 Supplement 4) and a separate safety recall (25S37 for Brake master Cylinder) because the Vehicle was originally manufactured for Canadian market. Despite the Vehicle being in a U.S. facility, Ford claims a 'system limitation' prevents them from bridging the VIN for these safety repairs. This is a formal refusal…
P0706: questions drivers ask
What does code P0706 mean?
P0706 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Range/Performance". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 6 car models.
Which cars get code P0706 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0706 is mentioned most for the Ford F-150 (26), Chevrolet Tahoe (3), Ford Expedition (3), across 6 models and model years 2014 to 2021. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0706?
No NHTSA recall text names P0706 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Power Train); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0706?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0706. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
