What happened when owners saw P0734?
10 of the 12 reports, spread across the models above, as the owners wrote them. NHTSA removes names and VINs; long reports are trimmed. CarHooq has not verified individual claims.
2018 Ford F-150 5.0L with 10R80 10-speed transmission, approximately 86,000 miles. The transmission began exhibiting abnormal shifting, including missed shifts and loss of propulsion. On multiple occasions while traveling approximately 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power/propulsion. During these events, the gear indicator changed from 10th to 1st and engine RPM appeared to increase. I do not believe the transmission physically engaged 1st gear; the actual gear engaged is UNKNOWN. The unexpected loss of propulsion at highway speed created a safety concern because the vehicle would not respond normally to accelerator input while traveling with traffic. The transmission also malfunctioned…
Transmission FAIL check engine light went on. Car was not accellorating, bucking can't drive over 30 MGH. Thank god I was drving a back street when it happened and not the Mass Pike. Two estimates done. They both said replace the transmission. WHAT ??? Burnt transmission fluid at 77,400 miles. Three Diagnostic Errors P0128 P0734 P1790 . I have to REPLACE my transmission at a cost of $5,000 This is not supppose to happen at 77,400 . Please advise and recall or concessions available.
My van only has 59,400 miles on it. We were on vacation stopped at a stoplight, when the light turned green, I stepped on the gas pedal, the engine would rev up and there was a high pitched sound, and then the van would jerk forward. The van exhibited difficulty with shifting. No warning lights came on before this incident, only after the van started to exhibit difficulty shifting. Codes noted: P0734-Gear Ratio Error in 4th P0868-Line Pressure Low P0745-Gear Ratio Error in 5th P083B-LC Pressure switch rationality P1790- Fault Immediately After Shift P0944-Loss of hydraulic Pump Prime I had to have my van towed to a Chrysler dealership they noted that the transmission fluid pump line pressure…
Vehicle warning indicated to restart car. Pulled over and car did not restart. Dealership indicated that the power steering belt broke the crank sensor on the motor and if the sensor was broke it would not start. They stated that they wouldn’t look for any other issues if it was the sensor that was out and that was the reason for the car not starting so they would not look further. Diagnostics was run but they only pinpointed the initial Pcode failure and worked on that specific issue. There was an open recall on the vehicle at the time the vehicle was in the shop but that was overlooked. The vehicle failed to operate properly the day AFTER I picked up the vehicle. The vehicle was driven for…
While driving my car started skipping from first to second gear and then lowering acceleration. When at a complete stop car would not accelerate and just revs through first and second gear making a pinging clicking sound. Brought to dealership to be told codes p0702 and code p0734 were reading. I've had the car one year and has been maintained. Before I got the diagnosis I drove to the dealership there was no lights on even though there was the issue and then right as I pulled in the transmission light check came on. This problem has been confirmed by Ford dealership from transmission and engine diagnostic. Not being able to accelerate at a green light put my safety at risk.
2021 Ford Ranger with 10R80 transmission showing following codes P0733 P0734 90,000 miles on truck. jerky and slipping gear change between 3-4 and 5-6 occasionally no drive. have service records showing my truck was maintained properly.
Transmission intermittently struggling to reach 3rd, 4th, 5th gears. Performed IDS diag at shop, found hitorical code P0734 for "Incorrect gear 4 ratio" TSB 26-2046 to overhaul transmission.
TRAVELING ON I-5 IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC 0- 60 MPH WHEN TRANSMISSION STARTED SHIFTING ROUGHLY. IT THEN SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO SHIFTER INPUTS. I WAS IN THE SECOND LANE FROM THE RIGHT DOING 10 OR 15 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO FORCE MY WAY INTO THE RIGHT LANE AND OFF TO THE SHOULDER. I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN SPORT AND PADDLE SHIFTER MODE WITH NO RESPONSE FROM THE SHIFT SELECTOR. THINKING THIS IS A COMPUTER PROBLEM I REBOOTED BY SHUTTING CAR OFF AND RESTARTING. ALL FUNCTIONS RETURNED TO NORMAL. TOOK TO DEALER WHERE I GOT VERY GOOD SERVICE BUT IT TURNS OUT THERE WAS A MERCEDES BULLETIN REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. IT REQUIRED A SOFTWARE UPDATE THAT HAS APPEARENTLY FIXED THE PROBLEM. WHAT…
Sudden loss of forward gears. Failure happened on highway at highway speeds. Had to carefully maneuver the truck off the road. Failure in both towing and unloaded operation. Truck will not shift in or out of drive (1-4) but reverse is still functional. Diagnostic trouble code P0731-00 and P0734 "Gear 1 and 4 Shift Incorrect Ratio". Both the dealer and RAM confirm this transmission failure. RAM has realeased a TSB which covers this failure but hasn’t released a recall.
I own a 2018 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10R80 automatic transmission. The vehicle currently has approximately 70,000 miles. The transmission has developed intermittent harsh shifting and, more concerningly, has repeatedly appeared to slip or disengage from gear while the vehicle is moving. On multiple occasions while driving at highway speeds, pressing the accelerator did not result in acceleration because the transmission was no longer effectively transferring power to the wheels. This caused a temporary loss of motive power while traveling in traffic. The transmission subsequently re-engaged. The vehicle has also stored diagnostic trouble code P0734, indicating an incorrect 4th-gear…
P0734: questions drivers ask
What does code P0734 mean?
P0734 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 9 car models.
Which cars get code P0734 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0734 is mentioned most for the Ford F-150 (4), Chrysler 200 (1), Chrysler Town and Country (1), across 9 models and model years 2013 to 2022. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0734?
No NHTSA recall text names P0734 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Power Train); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0734?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0734 (including sub-code forms such as P073400). The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
