This exact situation has occurred twice in the past 6000 miles driven. Both occurred while driving at highway speeds, once on I85N and once on I75N in GA. Our 2023 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid suddenly and unexpectedly loss power and shutdown. This forced us to make an emergency stop and attempt to pull over in high speed, heavy traffic in both instances. The vehicle eventually restarted and was drivable with a check engine light illuminated. The DTCs were read with an OBDII scanner and were recorded as P0811, P0E71 and P1920. The first time this occur the vehicle was taken back to Ford under warranty and they said they reprogrammed the PCM and another control module and assured us it was…
2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid XLT lost all engine power at highway speed in the left lane of [XXX] . Red Warning Triangle with notice to pull over and Check Engine light with codes P0811, P0E71 and P1920. Truck then went completely dead, no electrical indication on the instrument panel and would not start. I towed it to the dealer and they said they reset and reloaded software on the PCM and BCM, but no explanation of what caused the issue to occur. Very unsafe for everyone if these hybrid vehicles can just go dead like this with no warning and no prior issues. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Accelerated to merge onto highway. Vehicle alerted to pull over safely when possible. Internal combustion engine shut off and vehicle "limped" in electric only mode until I could find a spot to park. This all happened while traveling at 70MPH on a busy freeway. Once I shut the vehicle off, I was able to start it again and travel to my nearest dealer. Dealer was unable to diagnose the issue but advised it was safe to drive home to our local dealer. Truck is currently at local dealer being diagnosed. One CEL of note was P0811 (clutch slippage). This truck is nearly brand new with fewer than 12,000 miles on the odometer. I have had similar Check Engine Lights with similar results of not being…
Some 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrids have a faulty seal and leak oil onto transmission and clutch. I was accelerating on the HWY when engine light came on (solid). Noticed it needed more time and effort to accelerate. When parked and ran idle vehicle would suddenly jump- the rpm would shoot up sporadically for several minutes. There were no prior symbols or symptoms to this issue, and the vehicle is new. It happened exactly at 128 miles. Issue was apparent less than 12hrs of ownership. Took it to the Ford dealership which I purchased the vehicle from on Monday, I took possession Friday. The service advisor diagnosed it with transmission clutch slippage (P0811) and that the dampener (clutch?)…
P0811: questions drivers ask
What does code P0811 mean?
P0811 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Excessive Clutch Slippage". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 1 car model.
Which cars get code P0811 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P0811 is mentioned most for the Ford Maverick (4), across 1 model and model years 2022 to 2023. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P0811?
No NHTSA recall text names P0811 directly. 4 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Power Train); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P0811?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P0811. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
