Check engine code P2002. Dealer indicated the diesel particulate filter needs replaced. Found Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 20M06 which based on the description covers the issue but Ford says 20M06 is not attached to my VIN even though it represents the exact same issue.
An OBD2 engine code of P2002 came up, so I took it to my local Ford Dealership. While it was at the dealership, I did a little research and found out that this crack on the DPF filter was a common occurrence on 2017-2020 F250 and F350 Powerstrokes. Ford is aware of this problem but they told me that my warranty would not cover this, as it was a "filter"! This crack is located on the piping right before a flange connection! It is a factory weld that is cracking in every one of this diesel trucks! I was quoted a repair cost of over $6300 ! This is outrageous and I refuse to pay this much for a "filter " because only the dealership can replace it!
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Transit. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that DTC: P2002 was displayed. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the diesel particulate filter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to the Customer Satisfaction Program: 23M01 (Certain 2015-2019 Ford Transit 3.2L Diesel Replace Diesel Particulate Filter); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was…

Erratic def gauge readings, unstable idling, clunking downshift when exhaust brake decelerates, warm up stumbling. Power reduced, see dealer (over and over and over and over). Limp Mode (5 MPH). Permanent ticks/taps from front left motor, front passenger wheel well, passenger side mid-truck. Extremely loose gear shifter plus an occasional “Vehicle Not in Part” message on the dash display. Manufacturers Service Center (local and ONLY Ram dealership) has reproduced the issue. Independent Diesel Mechanic…
I FILLED THE FUEL TANK, WHICH WAS NOT QUITE EMPTY, WITH DIESEL ON 11/21. ON 11/25, AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES AND MULTIPLE TRIPS, IT WOULD NOT START FOR MANY TRIES ONCE IT WAS SHUT OFF, EVEN WITH ENGINE HOT. FAR FROM HOME, I WAS AFRAID TO SHUT IT OFF. THE TEMPERATURE WAS NEAR FREEZING, TANK A LITTLE MORE THAN HALF. I GOT IT STARTED THREE MORE TIMES AFTER THIS AND DROVE ANOTHER 150 MI. WITHOUT ISSUES, AND IT HAS NOT STALLED. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN MISFUELED. ON 11/28, STARTED IT WITH 3 10-15 SECOND TRIES AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. DEALER COULD NEVER GET IT STARTED, CLAIMED TO SEE METAL PARTICLES IN FILTER AND TOOK FUEL SAMPLE FOR TESTING. SERVICE MGR MADE COMMENTS ABOUT NOT NEEDING…
The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-250. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced reduced power and poor fuel efficiency. The messages "DPF System Overloaded" and "Exhaust System Fault - 50 Miles Until Speed Restrict" were displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on four separate occasions. The dealer performed a manual regeneration three times, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was determined that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program Number: 20M06 (Diesel Particulate Filter Warranty…

P2002: questions drivers ask
What does code P2002 mean?
P2002 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Particulate Trap Efficiency Below Threshold". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 5 car models.
Which cars get code P2002 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P2002 is mentioned most for the Ford F-250 (3), Ford F-350 (1), Ford Transit (1), across 5 models and model years 2014 to 2020. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P2002?
No NHTSA recall text names P2002 directly. 3 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Engine); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P2002?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P2002. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
