CHECK ENGINE LIGHT / MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP CAME ON IN CAR. I WAS ABOUT 1 MILE INTO MY COMMUTE TO WORK DRIVING AROUND 50MPH.TOOK TO VOLKSWAGEN DEALER AND CAR HAD P203B, REDUCTANT LEVEL SENSOR CIRCUIT WHICH WAS A DAMAGED AD BLUE SENSOR. MECHANIC AND SALES ADVISOR MENTIONED THAT THIS PART IS CRITICAL AND THE CAR WILL SHUT OFF AND NOT START UNTIL REPLACED. I WAS FORCED TO FIX OR BE LEFT WITH A NON-RUNNING CAR. SALES ADVISOR MENTIONED THAT THIS PART HAS BEEN UPDATED AND FIXED BY VOLKSWAGEN AND THAT THE NEW PART WILL NOT MALFUNCTION FOR NEWER CARS. I'M NOT SURE IF THE CAR WOULD SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION OR ON THE INTERSTATE, BUT IT COULD BE A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. I FEEL THIS…

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THROWING P203B CODE, WHICH IS THE REDUCTANT LEVEL SENSOR CODE. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE ALREADY IN THESE VEHICLES DATING BACK TO 2011 WHEN IT STARTED. I FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN #14652A REGARDING THE REPLACEMENT OF SUCH SENSOR BUT THE DATES ON THE VEHICLES ONLY STATE 2011-2012. I WANT TO SEE IF THERE IS A NEWER BULLETIN RELEASED WHICH COVERS THE LATER YEARS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.

The engine light activated on the dash randomly while driving. My truck was experiencing loss of power and for the next few days and reduced fuel mileage. I checked the engine code and learned it is a common error with 2017 Ford Super Dutys with the 6.7L diesel engine. The code is “DTC P203B”, sometimes indicated as P203B00 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a manufacturer-specific fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the air/fuel mixture causing reductant level sensor circuit range/performance. I believe this error in manufacturing is a safety risk because it is common within these trucks and can leave motorists stranded…

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, DTC: P203B was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the code was constantly illuminated and was illuminated when the vehicle was started. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the reductant tank sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer advised the contact that there had been a manufacturer recall for the failure, but the VIN was not included. The contact was not provided the manufacturer recall number by the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred…

THE FIX APPARETLY IS OVER 1000.00 AND IT SEEMS TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM FOR MANY 2012 VW PASSAT TDI VEHICLES WHICH ARE RIGHT OUT OF WARRANTY. THE FIX IS A KIT FOR THE ADBLU EMISSIONS SYSTEM. NOX SENSOR MALFUNCTIONED OUT OF RANGE CODE. WAS QUOTED 655 DOLLARS TO REPLACE. NOX SENSORS ARE NOT REQUIRED BY FEDERALLY MANDATED 80K EMISSIONS WARRANTY SO VW WON'T INCLUDE VOLUNTARILY. ONE WEEK AFTER HAVING THIS FIXED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON AGAIN WITH CODE P203B, REDACTANT LEVEL RANGE/PERFORMANCE. SPEAKING A FEW TIMES WITH TECHNICIANS AT THE DEALERSHIP, THIS LIKELY MEANS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE AD BLUE HEATER UNIT AND TANK WHICH IS OVER 1000 DOLLARS. AGAIN, NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

P203B: questions drivers ask

What does code P203B mean?

P203B is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (engine, transmission, fuel and emissions), so its exact definition depends on the carmaker and is not in the generic OBD-II list. 7 owners reported it to NHTSA, most often for the Volkswagen Passat (4), Chevrolet Silverado (1), Ford F-250 (1); their reports describe what happened.

Which cars get code P203B most often?

In NHTSA owner complaints, P203B is mentioned most for the Volkswagen Passat (4), Chevrolet Silverado (1), Ford F-250 (1), across 4 models and model years 2012 to 2017. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.

Is there a recall for code P203B?

No NHTSA recall text names P203B directly. 4 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Fuel/Propulsion System); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What should I do if my car shows P203B?

Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.

How this page was made

CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P203B. Manufacturer codes have no public standard definition, so CarHooq shows only what owners reported. Nothing here is a diagnosis.
