Approximately 2-3 weeks ago (around time car hit 100,000 miles), I began noticing hard downshifts when my car was slowing down between 30-20 mph. It felt as if I was being rear ended every time I came to a stop, with a very forceful physical jerking sensation. I had my husband drive it to confirm I wasn't being paranoid, then had my dad drive it (who has been a mechanic for 40+ years) to get his thoughts. He determined likely a transmission issue and recommended I take it to my local Ford Service Center. Ford confirmed I had a P2704 code and recommended a full replacement of my transmission. I took it to an independent transmission center who confirmed the diagnosis (test drove to confirm…
On June 20th 2026 while driving my 2023 Ford Edge SEL AWD at approximately 35mph on an active hwy (93 AZ NB in Wickenburg AZ) the vehicle experienced a sudden catastrophic loss of motive power and came to a sudden stop in a jerking motion. The vehicle completely disabled itself without warning in live traffic, presenting an immediate and severe safety hazard to myself and surrounding motorists. I was forced to stay in an immobile position impeding the flow of traffic and could not coast safely out of the way of hazardous traffic conditions and subsequently was almost hit by a semi-truck and another POV. The vehicle was subsequently towed out of the hwy with law enforcement present for safety…
Transmission went out at 65,000 miles. Son was inn the middle of traffic got a message the stop driving immediately and the car started running rough. two codes P2703 and P2704. these are for solenoids. Had trouble getting out of traffic and off the road and almost got hit by another car. He was able to lug across multiple lanes to pull over on the side of the road. This happened at night and the road is busy. Ford has told us that the transmission is an 'enclosed system' and the entire transmission has to be replaced. Due to the enclosed system there is no way to check the transmission fluid levels, etc. The transmission breaking came out of no where and is not related to the transmission…
On 8/19/24 the transmission started slipping mildly. 8/20/24 slipping progresses to total failure to engage. I was on the highway (10 miles out of town) when it became clear I would not make it to my destination- I pulled off at a driveway to turn around and attempt to make it to my mechanic. At the driveway, I placed the gearshift in reverse to make a 3 point turn; the gear would not engage and the truck rolled back into a ditch, with 1 tire suspended in the air, tetering at a wavering 45 degree angle. Leaning weight of all passengers uphill and placing truck in 4-high, the transmission did engage in drive and I was fortunately able to avert the seemingly inevitable rolling of the vehicle…
We purchased this 2017 Ford Fusion 1.5L EcoBoost in August 2022 at 48,968 miles. At 55,940 miles, the vehicle developed a documented coolant leak requiring water-pump replacement. At approximately 75,520 miles, the coolant level was again documented as requiring attention. At approximately 84,189 miles, the vehicle experienced low coolant, low oil, white/gray smoke and rough running. Manteca Ford identified Ford TSB 22-2322 and ultimately performed a major short-block replacement. Despite this major engine repair, mechanical and drivability problems continued. At approximately 101,375 miles, we returned the vehicle to Manteca Ford specifically for loss of power and hesitation. The Ford…
The 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat , mileage 42,362 would not go into reverse, the wrench was lit up on dash. Shut Truck off it cleared the code, immediately took it to Ford dealer. Was sent home because the tech said the light was off so he couldn’t diagnose. After reading about the issue we made the appt for a diagnostic scan. The codes were P2704, P0772 . The truck has been with dealership since 09/14/2026. It’s the 10R80 transmission with a service bulletin out on the CDF drum.mechanical defect that Ford knowingly sold to unsuspecting consumers. I was able to get a goodwill assist from Ford to help with repair , told they would cover 40% but are now only wanting to pay 16% . The time warranty…
WHILE DRIVING THE SHIFTING IS HARD AND DOESN'T SEEM TO KNOW WHICH GEAR IT WANTS TO BE IN AT TIMES, WHEN PUT ON OBD SCAN GIVES P2704 CODE, HAVE CHECKED PLUGS, FLUID LEVELS, REPLACED SPEED SENSORS, AND STILL GIVING SAME PROBLEM, ALSO I HAVE TRIED TO HAVE KEY FOBIC PROGRAMED AND ALL IT WILL DO IS START, WILL NOT UNLOCK OR LOCK WITH CORRECT FOBIC, GIVES CODE FOR RADIO FREQUENCY HUB, I KNOW THE RECALLS HAVE BEEN CHECKED BUT THINK THEY DID NOT TAKE.
My wrench light came on in my 2019 Ford Explorer with 2.3L engine last week. It caused my vehicle to have lack of acceleration during launch and shudder while driving. When my son and I took off from a stop, it was very slow when crossing traffic. Made appointment with Ford dealership to have it looked at the next morning. After car was parked and restarted, wrench light went off. Kept appointment and told them a mechanic friend said it sounded like the torque converter (which my mother who has a 2019 Ford Edge just had replaced the week before!). Explained this to the dealership, they said it didn't sound like that was it. 4 wheel drive module was corrupt so they updated it and told me I…
P2704: questions drivers ask
What does code P2704 mean?
P2704 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code. Its standard definition is "Transmission Friction Element 'E' Apply Time Range/Performance". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 7 car models.
Which cars get code P2704 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, P2704 is mentioned most for the Ford Explorer (2), Ford Edge (1), Ford Escape (1), across 7 models and model years 2015 to 2023. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code P2704?
No NHTSA recall text names P2704 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Power Train); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows P2704?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of P2704. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
