Statement for NHTSA Subject: Safety Complaint – 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Unexpected Jerking/Harsh Transmission Engagement I am submitting this complaint regarding my 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.7L Turbo with approximately 128,000 miles. My vehicle has developed a recurring problem involving harsh/jerking transmission engagement, hesitation, shuddering and abnormal shifting. The truck can jerk when engaging or changing gears and has also experienced a hard engagement when shifting from Reverse into Drive. During normal driving, the vehicle can hesitate or feel as though it is repeatedly fluttering/shifting instead of providing smooth and predictable acceleration. The vehicle has produced…
While driving approximately 53 mph on a main road, my 2017 Ford Focus suddenly displayed the message “Engine Fault Service Now.” The vehicle immediately entered limp mode, downshifted into 2nd gear, and would not accelerate above approximately 31 mph. During the event, the engine shook noticeably and made abnormal noises. No check engine light appeared during this initial incident. This problem occurred multiple times over several days, most often when the fuel tank was below approximately half full. Each time, I was able to temporarily restore normal operation by shutting the vehicle off, waiting about one minute, and restarting it. After restarting, the vehicle would drive completely…
check engine light came on and is currently pulling the following codes. P25A2 U0146 U0101 U0100 MIL Status- off Freeze frame DTC- u0146 I had an oil change done by Hare Chevy in Noblesville 2 weeks ago, never an issue with my truck until after I left the dealership. Stanley Chevy in Mccordsville looked at it this morning and said they have to order a bunch of parts for it, including new leaf springs for a truck that is less than 2 years old…never have heard of such a thing.
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY STALLED/DIED, THOUGH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/ELECTRONICS STAYED ON. I TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE, BUT THE ENGINE WOULDN'T TURN OVER. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CYCLED THROUGH RANDOM ERROR MESSAGES "VEHICLE PHONE REQUIRES SERVICE, SERVICE AIRBAG SYSTEM, OIL PRESSURE LOW, SERVICE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL". DODGE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULDN'T REPLICATE THE ISSUE, AND SENT ME HOME. ON 4/4/2020, AND 6/626/2020 THE ENGINE WOULDN'T TURN OVER DESPITE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TURNING ON. ON 4/15/2020 THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE BATTERY WAS DEFECTIVE AND CHARGED ME TO REPLACE IT, BUT THE ISSUE IS STILL NOT RESOLVED. ON 5/1/2020 THE TRUNK RANDOMLY OPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS…
I BOUGHT MY CAR FROM A USED CAR LOT IN MARCH. AFTER ABOUT 2 WEEKS, I STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL, AFTER A FEW MONTHS, THE CRUISE SWITCH HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER. DURING THE TIME I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE, I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT CONTROL, AS WELL AS A COIL IN THE ENGINE. FOR THE PAST 2-3 MONTHS OR SO, I'LL BE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE SERVICE STABILITY TRACK WILL SHOW UP, WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BLINKING. MY CAR WONT LET ME SPEED UP, AND IT WILL SLOWLY SLOW DOWN. IF I HAVE MY CRUISE ON WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE CAR'S RPM WILL SHOOT UP IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET BACK TO THE SPEED I HAD IT SET AT. AFTER ABOUT A…
WHILE ON VACATION TRAVELING ON 81S IN VA & DOING 70 MPH ON THE 3-LANE HWY., WITHOUT A WARNING A POWER REDUCTION MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DASH; THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. OUR VEHICLE WENT FROM 70 MPH (POSTED SPEED) TO 40 MPH. IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. WE HAD A TRACTOR TRAILER PUSHING US & A CAR PASSING US ON THE LEFT. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE FAST REACTIONS OF MY HUSBAND AND HELP FROM THE MAN ABOVE, WE WOULD NOW BE 6' UNDER. AFTER SHAKING & GAINING OUR WITS, WE CONSULTED THE VEHICLE HANDBOOK TO CHECK ON A POSSIBLE REASON FOR THE POWER REDUCTION & HOW TO PROCEED. THIS ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN LOGGED AS DRIVER ERROR, WHEN ACTUALLY IT WAS VEHICLE MALFUNCTION. WE LEFT THE VEHICLE IN VA AT A…
The problems listed in my vehicle are the following • U0073: Control Module Communication Bus A Off • U0100: Lost Communication With Engine Control Module • U0121: Lost Communication with Electronic Brake Control Module • U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module • P0700: Transmission Control Module Requested MIL Illumination I believe this is due to a bad design in the wiring. Also the electric brake vacuum broke which is a common problem.
WAS DRIVING TRUCK AT 70MPH ON HIGHWAY, WENT TO CHANGE LANES, WAS IN CRUISE CONTROL. LOST ALL POWER, THEN ALL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND OFF. ENGINE CODE WHEN TAKEN IN TOO DEALERSHIP WAS P00700 AND U0100
My safety & the safety of others was at great risk while driving my 2018 dodge charger sxt. While driving my dashboard lights went completely dark and the steering wheel locked. I was unable to move out of lanes threatening my life and the life of others around me. Independent mechanic put scanner in my car days later and code that appeared was “U0100 Lost Communication With ECM/PCM” I looked up my vin # on mopar.com and noticed my vehicle did have a “Important Safety Recall: Reprogram Powertrain Control Modulel”
The vehicle is just under 37K miles. I was operating the vehicle normally, and the wrench icon came on, indicating a powertrain issue. There are recalls for this for some vehicles but not all, and it seems to occur just after warranties expiring. I am concerned my vehicle falls under this service bulletin but has not been properly added: SSM 49157 - 2020 Escape - Illuminated MIL With DTCs U0100, U0401, P166B, P1753, P0929, And/Or P0919 Some 2020 Escape vehicles may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) U0100, U0401, P166B, P1753, P0929, and/or P0919. The vehicle may also exhibit an illuminated powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator…
U0100: questions drivers ask
What does code U0100 mean?
U0100 is a generic OBD-II network code. Its standard definition is "Lost Communication With ECM/PCM A". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 26 car models.
Which cars get code U0100 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, U0100 is mentioned most for the Chevrolet Silverado (7), Ford Focus (4), Chevrolet Silverado LD (3), across 26 models and model years 2012 to 2023. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code U0100?
No NHTSA recall text names U0100 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Electrical System); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows U0100?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of U0100. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
