Lost Communication with TCM
U0101 is a standard code covering network: communication between the car's control modules. It names the system that logged the fault, not the part that failed. Below: which cars owners reported it on, what happened, and recalls on those cars, from 57 complaints filed with NHTSA. Updated November 3, 2026.
Owners also write it as U010100 (the last two characters are the sub-code).

What happened when owners saw U0101?

I own a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado LTZ Texas Edition with 51,000 miles, equipped with the factory multi-camera system and rear backup camera. The camera images are clear and all cameras function normally, but the forward/reverse guide/trajectory lines no longer appear. When the cameras are activated, a blue hourglass appears in the upper-left corner and the guide lines never load. This is a safety concern because the guide lines help the driver judge the vehicle's path and distance when backing up and maneuvering in tight areas. The loss of this feature reduces the functionality of the factory safety/parking camera system. I took the truck to an authorized GM dealer. They diagnosed a front…
FORD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WONT GO AWAY!! TRANSMISSION SHUTTER AND POOR INITIAL ACCELERATION. THE CLUTCH HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE AND TCM TWICE BY FORD DEALER. AFTER THE LAST TCM REPLACEMENT IN 2016 PROBLEMS CONTINUED AND I WAS TURNED AWAY BY FORD DEALERSHIPS BECAUSE NO ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. NOW THAT FINALLY A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON U0101, P07A3, I AM NOW OVER 100, 000 MILES THE CLUTCH IS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE TCM IS. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR LOST ALL ACCELERATION ABILITIES WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY OR SIMPLY FAIL TO ACCELERATE AND A TRAFFIC LIGHT CAUSING MAJOR DELAYS FOR ANYONE AROUND ME. IT HAS BEEN A SAFTEY CONCERN FOR YEARS DUE TO THE…
While driving at highway speed, my 2025 GMC Sierra suddenly began slowing down without warning and lost propulsion. When I pressed the accelerator, there was no acceleration response. The vehicle felt like it was braking or dragging instead of accelerating, creating a serious crash risk in traffic. A warning message appeared instructing me to “Put in neutral and restart truck.” I followed the instruction, but the vehicle would not restart. It sounded like it was attempting to start, but it would not start normally. A “Service ESC” warning also appeared. The vehicle was towed by AAA to a GMC dealership and remains available for inspection. The dealership provided a diagnostic trouble code…
Service Stabilitrak, Power Steering light, Check Engine light. Door locks lock and unlock continuously. Randomly has No acceleration, causes jolting at a low speed. Available for inspection asap. The code “UO101” comes up in a diagnostic test. Overall, the car basically shuts down while driving at no specific speed. Safety of myself and others is at risk because this can cause an accident resulting in being rear ended/collision with car and other vehicles as it randomly happens when driving. I took my car to the dealership on 3/5/25 and expressed this issue and they could not diagnose it as it was not physically happening after I dropped it off to them. They had the car for 4 days and…
I have about 08/1825 had the throttle body replaced on my vehicle which assisted with the problem temporarily. Then the problem started again 09/20/25 the car act like it’s stalling while driving and can’t see what hear the vehicle is in. The car is not getting any signal to the engine as I have been advised the TCM is faulty. There was a code of U0101.
I have been an issue with my auto stop system past 6 months. While driving and coming to a complete stop the auto stop kicks into gear as it should but when I release the gas pedal to drive off it stalls for a about 20 seconds unlocking/locking doors and proceeds to kick into drive gear. I have had auxiliary battery checked and it’s good. Checked main battery components those are good too! No check engine light came on only when I removed auxiliary battery removed to have it diagnosed it did give me a code of UO101 but quickly went away when replaced. Still trying to figure what the issue may be but it’s becoming more and more constant and worse. Dangerous when it happens on uphill and cars…
I have a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ. 5.3 Ecotrac 8 transmission with 89,000 miles. I bought it used and have had it 12 months, but only drove it 9 before it malfunctioned causing severe electrical & mechanical problems. I was driving the truck when the EPB, service engine, stabilitrac, ECBM warning lights came on, also driving over 43 miles an hour could cause a crash due brake failure This caused the emissions. transmission, & throttle to shut down Truck would not shift out of low gear. It would shift to park but did not recognize it was in park which kept the accessory on running down the battery, the tail gate would not open, and the information system shut down. I got sick and was…
I took my 2022 Jeep Wrangler to my local Jeep dealership for a 21D Fire risk campaign recall inspection and powertrain software update. Car had to be towed to dealership a few days after services were completed, and was diagnosed at dealership, with an offline TCM, throwing a U0101 code. Car was in good working, driving order prior to the recall and software update and is now completely inoperable.
My 2016 Colorado is having a power steering failure identical to the 2015 recall. Recall #16V054000 (issued February 2016) covered 2015 Colorados and Canyons with the same type of electric power steering (EPS) gear assembly prone to internal corrosion. Exact failure symptoms: Sudden stiff steering, steering wheel locks/stiffens “Service power steering” or “Stabilitrak” warnings DTC codes like U0073, U0101, C0545, etc. Defective part: Original gear assembly: GM part #23228020 Revised torque sensor cover kit (to prevent corrosion): GM part #84344239 The vehicle has been taken to the dealership in January when this failure first occured. The dealer claimed it was due to the corroded negative…
Power steering stability trak doors locking making clicking sound all this shows up on dash and the car feels like it is accelerating and then jerks slows down and a big sound putting it into gear and a code that says U0101
U0101: questions drivers ask
What does code U0101 mean?
U0101 is a generic OBD-II network code. Its standard definition is "Lost Communication with TCM". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 25 car models.
Which cars get code U0101 most often?
In NHTSA owner complaints, U0101 is mentioned most for the Chevrolet Silverado (8), Ford Focus (6), GMC Sierra (6), across 25 models and model years 2012 to 2025. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.
Is there a recall for code U0101?
No NHTSA recall text names U0101 directly. 8 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Power Train); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What should I do if my car shows U0101?
Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.
How this page was made
CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of U0101 (including sub-code forms such as U010100). The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
