THE VEHICLE HAS TWO "TYPES" OF PROBLEM THAT MAY BE RELATED. IN SOME CASES, THE TRUCK DROPS DOWN INTO 1ST GEAR REGARDLESS OF THE SPEED. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES SINCE I PICKED UP THE TRUCK FOLLOWING THE ATTEMPTED RECALL REPAIR, BUT NONE OF THESE INCIDENCES OF DROPPING INTO 1ST GEAR CAUSED ERROR CODES TO POP UP. IN ANOTHER "TYPE" OF INCIDENT, THE SPEEDOMETER DROPS TO ZERO EVEN WHILE IN MOTION, AND THE VEHICLE STAYS IN 3RD GEAR NO MATTER THE SPEED (INCLUDING WHEN NOT IN MOTION, EVEN AFTER SHIFTING INTO PARK AND BACK TO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY JUMPS TO 3RD GEAR BEFORE I EVEN START TO MOVE). DURING THIS SECOND TYPE OF INCIDENT, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON, AS DID THE WRENCH/CHECK…

I am filing a complaint regarding the ineffectiveness of Ford Recall 15S18 / NHTSA 15V-340 on my 2012 Ford Fusion (VIN: [XXX] ). On [XXX], immediately after starting the vehicle (prior to moving), the Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system failed completely and a steering-assist warning illuminated. This occurred when a female driver attempted to operate the vehicle and could not drive it safely without power assist. Modern vehicles like the Fusion are not designed to be driven without EPAS, and as NHTSA has noted in prior recall actions, loss of assist requires significantly greater effort and poses a safety risk. Diagnostics showed U3000:49-08, confirming internal EPAS rack…

I WAS TRAVELLING ON A FREEWAY ~70MPH IN LEFT HAND LANE. WITHOUT WARNING THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WENT BLACK AND THE ENGINE STOPPED. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO DECELERATE AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE THROTTLE PEDAL. AN ORANGE BOX APPEARED ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE SPEEDOMETER SAYING 'TRANSMISSION NOT IN PARK'. I SIGNALED INTENTION TO PULL ONTO LEFT HAND SHOULDER BUT THERE WAS NO SOUND OR FLASHING FROM THE INDICATOR ARROW LIGHT IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. I BRAKED AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. I PUT THE GEAR SELECTOR INTO 'PARK' AND DEPRESSED ENGINE START BUTTON. THE INSTRUMENT LIGHTS THEN ILLUMINATED, AND THE INDICATOR LIGHT STARTED FLASHING. I THEN DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND ENGINE…

> After a routine oil change at a Jeep dealer on [XXX], the A/C in my 2018 Compass stopped working the next day. Compressor hardware is fine but the vehicle stored code U0423-00 (“Invalid Data Received from IPC”). This matches the defect covered under Recall T70 (2019 Compass) where invalid cluster data causes A/C failure, but my VIN is not included. This creates a safety concern: without working A/C, I cannot safely transport my [XXX] daughter in Florida heat, and it limits my ability to get to work. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate expansion of the recall to include affected 2018 models. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

U0423: questions drivers ask

What does code U0423 mean?

U0423 is a generic OBD-II network code. Its standard definition is "Invalid Data Received From Instrument Panel Control Module". The code tells you which system set the fault, not which part failed; the owner reports on this page show what it meant in practice for 5 car models.

Which cars get code U0423 most often?

In NHTSA owner complaints, U0423 is mentioned most for the Ford F-150 (1), Ford Fusion (1), Ford Taurus (1), across 5 models and model years 2012 to 2018. Popular models collect more reports because more of them are on the road.

Is there a recall for code U0423?

No NHTSA recall text names U0423 directly. 3 recalls on the cars that report this code concern the same component owners name most (Electrical System); they may or may not relate to the code. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What should I do if my car shows U0423?

Write down when the code appeared and what the car did (warning lights, loss of power, noises, speed, weather). Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls, ask a dealer or independent workshop to read the stored freeze-frame data before anyone clears the code, and keep the repair order. If the car loses power in traffic, stop driving it. CarHooq does not diagnose: these are owner reports and official recall notices, not repair advice.

How this page was made

CarHooq read the text of every owner complaint filed with NHTSA for 19 US and European brands (model years 2012 onwards) and picked out the diagnostic trouble codes owners wrote down. This page lists every mention of U0423. The definition is the generic SAE J2012 wording; a carmaker may use the code slightly differently. Nothing here is a diagnosis. Data: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (public domain), retrieved November 3, 2026. How CarHooq reports are made.
